Introduction

Soil quality plays a crucial role in determining the productivity of agricultural crops. Ultisol soils, in particular, are known for their acidic and low-fertility characteristics, making them challenging to cultivate. However, with the advent of modern agricultural practices, it is now possible to improve soil fertility and increase crop yields. This study aims to investigate the effect of providing Burkholderia Cepacia and Vermicompos on the absorption of phosphorus (P) and the growth of corn plants (Zea Mays L.) in ultisol soils.

Ultisol soils are characterized by their low pH levels and limited nutrient availability, making them less suitable for plant growth. Methodology

This study was conducted in the Greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra (USU) from June to November 2022. The experimental design used was a factorial complete random design with three replications and two treatments: the provision of Burkholderia Cepacia (0 ml; 5 ml) and Vermikompos (0 g; 100 g; 150 g; 200 g). The results were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine the effect of each treatment on soil pH, P availability, plant height, plant dry weight, and nitrogen (N) absorption.

Results

The results showed that the treatment with Burkholderia Cepacia can increase soil pH, the availability of phosphorus (P), plant height, plant dry weight, and absorption of plants. Likewise, the treatment with Vermicompos significantly increases soil pH, C-organic content, plant height, plant dry weight, and nitrogen (N) absorption. The interaction between Burkholderia Cepacia and Vermicompos also has a significant effect on the dry weight of the plant shoots.

Discussion

The results of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of providing Burkholderia Cepacia and Vermicompos in improving soil fertility and increasing crop yields. The increase in soil pH and P availability is attributed to the nitrogen-binding activity of Burkholderia Cepacia, which makes P more available to plants. The addition of Vermicompos provides additional benefits by increasing the content of C-organic in the soil, which serves to improve soil structure and increase water retention capacity.

The interaction between Burkholderia Cepacia and Vermicompos not only increases P absorption but also contributes to plant vegetative growth. The higher shooting of shoots indicates that plants can do photosynthesis more efficiently, thus encouraging better harvest yields. Therefore, the combination of giving Burkholderia Cepacia and Vermicompos can be an effective strategy in the cultivation of corn plants in ultisol soils.

This study highlights the importance of using biological technology and organic fertilization in improving soil fertility and increasing crop yields.
