Research Purpose and Methodology
This study aims to identify the picture of bacterial germs and antibiotic sensitivity in stroke patients who experience sepsis in the Inpatient Room of Neurological Hospital Adam Malik. The study was conducted using a descriptive method, where data was collected from stroke patients who experienced sepsis during the period of February 2018 to June 2018. The diagnosis of sepsis was determined based on the criteria of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM).
Research Results
From this study, we identified 43 stroke patients with sepsis, consisting of 20 patients treated at stroke corner and 23 patients in the neurological ward. The average time of sepsis was 4.74 ± 1.90 days. Gram-negative organisms became dominant in the microbiological spectrum, with a percentage of 86.0%. The most common cause of sepsis found in stroke corner was Klebsiella pneumonia as much as 40.0%, while in the neurological ward, Acinetobacter Baumanii recorded a figure of 39.1%.
For antibiotic sensitivity, the most sensitive drugs in stroke corner were amikacin (34.8%), Meropenem (30.2%), Cefoperazone (13.9%), and Levofloxacin (11.6%). In the neurological ward, antibiotics that showed the highest sensitivity were amikacin (41.8%), followed by Meropenem (39.5%), Gentamycin (23.2%), and Cefoperazone (16.2%).
Conclusion
From this study, it can be concluded that the bacteria that cause sepsis most commonly found in stroke patients in the inpatient room of Neurological Hajj Adam Malik Hospital are Klebsiella pneumonia and Acinetobacter baumanii . Antibiotics Amikacin and Meropenem indicate a high level of sensitivity to the majority of these patients. Knowledge of germ patterns and antibiotic sensitivity is very important to optimize treatment and reduce mortality in stroke patients who experience sepsis.
