Introduction

The increasing use of mobile communication devices in the lecture environment has become a very important need. The growing communication traffic, especially in the lecture building, shows how significant the presence of the device is. To ensure that communication goes smoothly, an adequate level of radio wave power is needed. However, during the propagation process, the level of radio wave power has decreased due to various factors. Distance, frequency, as well as barriers such as trees, buildings, walls, furniture, and even humans are the main causes of the decline.

Understanding Radio Wave Propagation

Radio wave propagation is the process by which radio waves travel through the air or space. The propagation of radio waves is affected by various factors, including distance, frequency, and obstacles. In the context of mobile communication, radio wave propagation is crucial for ensuring that communication signals are received clearly and reliably. However, the propagation of radio waves is a complex process, and predicting the level of radio wave power that will be received at a particular location is a challenging task.

The Need for a Radio Wave Propagation Model

Most communication device users move inside the building often hope that transmitters outside the building can provide sufficient levels of radio wave power. Unfortunately, the radio wave power amplifier device is not yet available inside the building. Therefore, a radio wave propagation model is needed that can predict accurately the losses of radio wave paths during the external propagation process into the building. A radio wave propagation model can help building managers and communication service providers to plan a transmitter antenna installation more effectively, so as to improve the communication experience of users in the building.

Methodology

In this study, a method of matching the propagation model is a development of the existing model and the measurement results. The measurement was carried out in six different rooms in the J14 Building, Faculty of Industrial Engineering, University of North Sumatra in Padang Bulan with the application of 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz frequencies. The proposed model is then compared with several previous propagation models, such as 3GPP models, WINNER+models, and Cost231 models.

Measurement and Data Collection

The measurement was carried out in six different rooms in the J14 Building, Faculty of Industrial Engineering, University of North Sumatra in Padang Bulan. The measurement was conducted using a mobile communication device, and the data was collected using a specialized software. The data was then analyzed to determine the level of radio wave power that was received at each location.

Analysis of Research Results

In the analysis, three main metrics are used to measure the performance of the model, namely the mean error (me), root mean square error (RMSE), and standard deviation error (SDE). These three metrics provide a clear indication of how far the prediction of the model deviates from real measurements. The proposed model shows the lowest ME, RMSE, and SDE values among the models that are compared, indicating that this model can provide high accuracy in predicting losses of radio wave pathways.

Comparison with Previous Propagation Models

The proposed model is compared with several previous propagation models, such as 3GPP models, WINNER+models, and Cost231 models. The results of the analysis show that the proposed model provides more accurate predictions of radio wave losses than the previous models.

With the right model, building managers and communication service providers can plan a transmitter antenna installation more effectively, so as to improve the communication experience of users in the building.

In this way, the hope to get a strong and stable signal in the lecture building can be realized, ensuring the teaching-learning process runs well without communication barriers.
