One approach to achieve this is through the use of beneficial microorganisms, such as Rhizobium, which can form symbiotic relationships with legume plants, enhancing their growth and productivity.

The Role of Rhizobium in Legume Plant Growth

Rhizobium is a genus of bacteria that lives in the soil and forms symbiotic relationships with legume plants, such as Stylosanthes guyanensis. These bacteria have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, making it available to the plant, which is essential for its growth and development. In return, the plant provides the bacteria with carbohydrates produced during photosynthesis.

Research Methods

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Rhizobium inoculation on the growth and production of Stylo legume forage (Stylosanthes guyanensis). The study was conducted at the Glasshouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra from July to September 1999. The research design used was a non-factorial random design (RAL) with three treatments, each repeated six times.

Treatments

The three treatments used in this study were:

P1: Planting media without Rhizobium
P2: Planting media with inoculants from the soil of the former legume plant
P3: Planting media with inoculants Rhizobium culture (rhizo-plus)

Research Results

The results of this study showed that Rhizobium inoculation treatment had a significant effect on the fresh production of Stylo plants. In fresh leaf production, the P3 treatment produced the highest average of 36.20 grams, followed by P2 of 34.94 grams, and P1 (control) of 13.06 grams.

Effect on Dry Production

Rhizobium inoculation treatment also significantly affects the dry production of Stylo plants. The highest average dry leaf oven production was obtained from P2 treatment of 9.66 grams, followed by P3 of 8.83 grams, and P1 of 3.06 grams.

Effectiveness of Root Bintil

In addition, the calculation of the number of effective root nodules shows the significant effect of the Rhizobium inoculation treatment. In P1 treatment, the average root nodule formed is only 0.50, while in P2 and P3 each shows a much higher number, which is 23.17 and 25.83.

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that Rhizobium inoculation significantly increases the growth and production of forage legume stylo. Increased biomass, both in the form of leaves and stems, as well as the number of root nodules that show more the great potential of Rhizobium inoculation in agriculture, especially in the cultivation of legume plants.

This study opens opportunities for the use of inoculation technology in increasing agricultural productivity, especially in facing the challenges of global food security. Rhizobium inoculation can be used as a tool to improve the growth and productivity of legume plants, which are an essential component of sustainable agriculture.

Future research should focus on the optimization of Rhizobium inoculation technology, including the development of more efficient inoculation methods and the identification of the most effective Rhizobium strains for different legume crops. Additionally, research should be conducted on the long-term effects of Rhizobium inoculation on soil fertility and the potential for Rhizobium to be used as a biofertilizer.
