Introduction

Heat stress is a significant occupational hazard that affects millions of workers worldwide, particularly in industries that involve physical labor in hot environments. The tofu industry is one such sector where workers are exposed to high temperatures and humidity levels, which can lead to heat-related illnesses. In this study, we aim to explore the relationship between heat pressure and pulse in workers in Pak Ponimin's tofu business units in Medan City in 2017.

Background

Heat stress occurs when the body's ability to cool itself is impaired, leading to a rise in body temperature. This can happen when the air temperature is high, and the humidity level is low, causing the body to lose water through sweating. If the body loses too much water, it can lead to dehydration, which can cause a range of symptoms, including headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. In severe cases, heat stress can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which can be life-threatening.

In the tofu industry, workers are exposed to high temperatures and humidity levels, which can lead to heat stress. The work environment in the tofu industry is often hot and humid, with temperatures ranging from 30°C to 40°C. Methodology

This study used a cross-sectional approach to investigate the relationship between heat pressure and pulse in workers in Pak Ponimin's tofu business units in Medan City in 2017. The study population consisted of 28 workers, who were all used as research samples using total population techniques. The measurement of heat pressure was done using a 4 in 1 Environment tool, while the pulse measurement was carried out by the palpation method using a stopwatch.

The data was then analyzed using the Univariate and Bivariate method, and the Product Moment correlation test was used to evaluate the relationship between the two variables. The results of the study showed that the highest temperature was recorded at 12:45 WIB, reaching 38.3ºC, while the lowest temperature was recorded at 08:30 WIB with a value of 37.9ºC.

Research Result

The results of the study showed that the highest temperature was recorded at 12:45 WIB, reaching 38.3ºC, while the lowest temperature was recorded at 08:30 WIB with a value of 37.9ºC. In addition, the second highest temperature was recorded at the same time as the pulse, which is 37.7ºC, and other lowest temperatures at 37.4ºC. From the pulse analysis, there were 22 workers (78.6%) who experienced an increase in pulse, while 6 workers (21.4%) had normal pulse.

The statistical test shows a significant relationship between heat pressure and pulse in workers, with the value of P obtained is 0.042 (p <0.05). This shows that the higher the heat pressure experienced, the higher the pulse recorded in the worker.

Implications and Recommendations

Based on these findings, there are several implications that need to be considered to improve the welfare of workers in the tofu business unit. It is recommended that the management of the Tofu Ponimin Business Unit installs water vapor fans to increase air circulation in the work area. In addition, it is also recommended that the drinking water supply facility is placed closer to the work location so that workers can easily access it.

Eating enough drinking water is also very important to maintain the body's hydration, especially when working in a hot environment. Workers are reminded to regularly consume water in order to replace lost body fluids during work activities. With these steps, it is expected that the health and productivity of workers can be maintained properly.

Conclusion

This study gives a clear picture of the effect of heat pressure on the pulse on workers in Pak Ponimin's tofu business units. The existence of a significant relationship between the two variables shows the importance of good work environment management to maintain the health of workers. Efforts to improve working conditions must continue to be carried out to create a safer and more comfortable workplace.

This study has several limitations, including the small sample size and the use of a cross-sectional approach. Future studies should aim to investigate the relationship between heat pressure and pulse in a larger sample size and using a longitudinal approach.
