Introduction

The importance of English language skills in today's globalized world cannot be overstated. As a result, many Indonesian senior high school students are required to learn English as a compulsory subject. However, the effectiveness of English language instruction in Indonesian senior high schools has been a topic of concern for many educators and policymakers. One of the key factors that can influence the success of English language instruction is the students' attitude towards learning English. This study aims to investigate the attitude of Indonesian senior high school students towards learning English, with a focus on the positive attitude of Tanjung Pura High School students.

Background

The importance of English language skills in Indonesia cannot be overstated. English is widely used as a language of communication in international business, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as in tourism and education. As a result, many Indonesian students are required to learn English as a compulsory subject in senior high school. However, the effectiveness of English language instruction in Indonesian senior high schools has been a topic of concern for many educators and policymakers.

Methodology

This study was conducted at Tanjung Pura State High School to investigate student attitudes towards English learning. The study involved 36 students, consisting of 21 female students and 15 male students who were randomly selected based on class spare time. This research method uses a mixed approach, which is a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was collected through a semi-structured questionnaire and interview. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, especially percentage, to analyze questionnaire data. Meanwhile, qualitative data from interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

The Positive Attitude of Tanjung Pura High School Students Towards English Learning

The results of this study showed that Tanjung Pura State High School students had a positive attitude towards English learning. This can be seen from their positive response to English, both in cognitive, affective, and behavior. Cognitive aspects: Students show a good understanding of the importance of English for their future. They realize that English language skills can open job opportunities and learning opportunities abroad. Affective aspects: Students feel the enthusiasm and pleasure in learning English. They argue that learning English is fun and challenging. Behavior aspects: Students show positive behavior in learning English. They are diligent in learning, active in class, and trying to practice their English language skills.

Factors Influencing Students' Positive Attitudes Towards English Learning

This study shows that internal factors such as motivation, interests, and self-confidence are very instrumental in shaping students' positive attitudes towards English learning. On the other hand, external factors such as family support, school environment, and teachers also have a great influence. Students who are motivated and interested in learning English are more likely to have a positive attitude towards English learning. Similarly, students who have a supportive family environment and a positive school environment are more likely to have a positive attitude towards English learning.

Based on the results of this study, here are some recommendations to improve students' positive attitudes towards English learning:
