Introduction

Breast cancer is a type of non-communicable disease that affects millions of people worldwide, including women in Indonesia. The University of North Sumatra, being one of the leading institutions in the region, has a significant role to play in promoting awareness about breast cancer among its students. Early detection is key to reducing the mortality rate of breast cancer, and this can be achieved through regular breast self-examination (BSE). However, many women, including students, are not aware of the importance of BSE and do not practice it regularly. This article discusses the influence of video media and leaflets on behaviors about BSE in students of the University of North Sumatra in 2023.

Background

Breast cancer is a major public health concern in Indonesia, with the number of cases and mortality rates continuing to increase every year. The University of North Sumatra has a significant role to play in promoting awareness about breast cancer among its students. Health promotion is essential in reducing the incidence of breast cancer, and this can be achieved through the use of appropriate media, such as video and leaflets. These media can facilitate the delivery of information and make students more interested in participating in conducting their own breast examination.

Methodology

This study aims to determine the effect of video media and leaflets on behavior regarding BSE among students of the University of North Sumatra. The type of research used is quantitative research with quasi-experimental design, using the two-group pre-post test design. The research sample consists of 34 students of the Japanese Literature Study Program. The research process begins with the pretest filling, followed by intervention in the form of video and leaflets, as well as filling posttest 1. After one month, respondents continue with posttest filling 2. Data analysis is carried out using the Wilcoxon test because data is not normally distributed.

Results

The results showed a significant difference in the average value of respondents' knowledge before (12.71) and after intervention (14.76) with p = 0.001. In addition, the attitude of the respondent also increased from 39.35 to 51.59 with p = 0.000, while the respondent's actions before (3.47) and after (7.41) received video intervention with p = 0.000. Meanwhile, for the leaflet media, there is an increase in respondent's knowledge from 11.65 to 14.47 (p = 0.001), the attitude from 38.53 to 49.35 (p = 0.001), and the action from 4.12 to 7.29 (p = 0.000). However, further analysis shows that respondents who get interventions through video media have an average value of knowledge (14.76), attitudes (51.59), and actions (7.41) are higher than those who get leaflets (knowledge = 14.47, attitude = 49.35, and action = 7.29).

Discussion

The results of this study show that both video media and leaflets have a significant effect on increasing knowledge, attitudes, and actions regarding BSE among students of the University of North Sumatra. However, the results also show that video media have a more significant effect than leaflets in increasing knowledge, attitudes, and actions. This suggests that video media may be a more effective medium for promoting awareness about BSE among students.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study shows that video media and leaflets have a significant effect on increasing knowledge, attitudes, and actions regarding BSE among students of the University of North Sumatra. The results of this study suggest that video media may be a more effective medium for promoting awareness about BSE among students. Therefore, it is recommended that the University of North Sumatra supports the behavior of awareness routinely by increasing education to students about the importance of conscious behavior. This can be done by utilizing health promotion materials, such as video and leaflets, to increase student awareness and knowledge about early detection of breast cancer.
