The Influence of the Application of National Education Standards on Employment Opportunities for Graduates of State Vocational School Students in the City of Medan
Introduction
The era of globalization has brought about significant changes in the labor market, requiring workers with different qualifications and skills compared to the previous period. Education plays a vital role in improving the quality of human resources (HR) and preparing students for the workforce. Vocational High School (SMK) is one of the educational institutions that aims to produce graduates ready to work and compete in the labor market. To achieve this goal, the government has applied national education standards through Government Regulation Number 19 of 2005, which regulates teacher standards, curriculum, facilities, and infrastructure.
Background
The application of national education standards is a crucial step in improving the quality of education in Indonesia. The regulation aims to ensure that all educational institutions, including SMK, provide high-quality education that meets the needs of the labor market. However, the implementation of these standards has been a challenge for many educational institutions, including SMK in Medan City. This study aims to examine the suitability of national education standards at Medan City Vocational School and its influence on graduate employment opportunities.
Methodology
This study involved graduates of SMKN 2 Medan, SMKN 4 Medan, and SMKN 5 Medan who graduated from 2005 to 2008. The research methods used Chi-Square with primary data from interviews using questionnaires and secondary data from various related agencies. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between the application of national education standards and graduate employment opportunities.
Results
The results of the study showed that the academic qualifications of teachers in Medan City Vocational School were not fully in accordance with the standards. However, the curriculum, facilities, and infrastructure have referred to Government Regulation Number 19 of 2005. Further analysis showed that the curriculum is a major factor that influences the employment opportunities of graduates before the application of national education standards. After the application, adequate facilities and infrastructure are a significant factor with a significance level of 0.1% or 99% confidence level. The curriculum also still affects the significance level of 0.5% or 95% confidence level.
Discussion
The results of the study indicate that a good curriculum and adequate infrastructure play an important role in increasing student job opportunities. The study also found that the teacher factor has no significant influence on the employment opportunities of SMK State Vocational Schools in Medan, both before and after the application of national education standards. This suggests that the quality of teachers is not a critical factor in determining graduate employment opportunities.
Implications of the Study
The study has several implications for educational institutions, policymakers, and stakeholders. Firstly, the importance of increasing the teacher's academic qualifications to meet established standards is highlighted. Secondly, the need for sustainable investment in facilities and infrastructure to support the learning process and increase the competitiveness of graduates is emphasized. Finally, it is necessary to evaluate and improve the curriculum regularly to remain relevant to the work market needs.
Conclusion
This study provides an overview of the importance of the application of national education standards in Medan City Vocational School to improve the quality of graduates and their job opportunities. However, further efforts are needed to overcome existing obstacles, such as teacher qualifications and ensuring the relevance of the curriculum to industrial needs. The study highlights the need for continuous improvement and innovation in education to meet the changing needs of the labor market.
Recommendations

Limitations of the Study
This study has several limitations that should be acknowledged. Firstly, the study only focused on SMK graduates in Medan City, which may not be representative of all SMK graduates in Indonesia. Secondly, the study only analyzed the relationship between the application of national education standards and graduate employment opportunities, which may not capture other factors that influence graduate employment opportunities.
