The Influence of Personal Factors and Environmental Factors on the Implementation of the Weight Loss Diet in Panca Budi Medan High School Students in 2014
Introduction
Diet weight loss has become a popular trend among adolescents, including high school students. However, not all diet weight loss methods are healthy and safe. In fact, unhealthy diet weight loss can lead to various health problems, including iron nutritional anemia. Therefore, it is essential to understand the factors that influence the implementation of weight loss diets among high school students. This study aims to investigate the effect of personal and environmental factors on the implementation of weight loss diets among Panca Budi Medan High School students in 2014.
Background
Diet weight loss is an effort to regulate diet with the aim of losing weight. This diet can be divided into a healthy and unhealthy diet. Unhealthy diet weight loss can cause various diseases, including iron nutritional anemia. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that iron nutritional anemia is a significant public health problem worldwide. In Indonesia, iron nutritional anemia is a common health problem among adolescents, including high school students.
Methodology
This study uses a cross-sectional design to reveal the effect of personal and environmental factors on the implementation of weight loss diets among Panca Budi Medan High School students. The study was conducted from January to May 2014. Data was obtained through interviews with respondents and analyzed by multiple logistics regression tests at a 95% confidence level.
Results
The results showed that personal factors such as body image (p = 0.020), nutritional knowledge (p = 0.013), and environmental factors such as family attitudes (p = 0.023), peer attitudes (p = 0.004), and the influence of mass media (p = 0.021) have a significant relationship with the implementation of weight loss diets. Nutritional status does not show a significant relationship with the implementation of the diet. The factor that has the biggest influence is the attitude of peers with Odd Ratio (OR) 37,154. This shows that the influence of peers has an important role in encouraging students to go on a weight loss diet.
Discussion
The results of this study suggest that personal and environmental factors play a significant role in the implementation of weight loss diets among Panca Budi Medan High School students. Body image and nutritional knowledge are personal factors that influence the implementation of weight loss diets. Students who have a positive body image and good nutritional knowledge are more likely to implement a healthy weight loss diet. Family attitudes and peer attitudes are environmental factors that also influence the implementation of weight loss diets. Students who have supportive family and peer attitudes are more likely to implement a healthy weight loss diet.
The influence of mass media is also a significant factor in the implementation of weight loss diets. Students who are exposed to mass media that promotes healthy weight loss diets are more likely to implement a healthy weight loss diet. However, students who are exposed to mass media that promotes unhealthy weight loss diets are more likely to implement an unhealthy weight loss diet.
Conclusion
The results of this study suggest that personal and environmental factors play a significant role in the implementation of weight loss diets among Panca Budi Medan High School students. Therefore, it is essential to provide education about healthy weight loss diets and the dangers of unhealthy weight loss diets to students. Parents and schools should also play a role in promoting healthy weight loss diets among students.
