Introduction

Tempe, a staple food in Indonesian society, is not only affordable but also rich in vegetable protein, making it a healthy and nutritious choice. However, manual tempeh slicing often takes time and results in non-uniform slices. To overcome this problem, this study aims to design and build a mechanical tempeh slicer that uses 0.5 hp driving force. This tool is expected to produce more neat and uniform slices, and increase the efficiency of tempe production in a shorter time than the manual method.

The Importance of Tempe in Indonesian Society

Tempe is a fermented soybean product that has been a staple food in Indonesian society for centuries. It is not only a source of protein but also rich in vitamins and minerals. The affordability and nutritional value of tempe make it a popular choice among Indonesians. However, the manual process of slicing tempe can be time-consuming and results in non-uniform slices. This can lead to a decrease in the quality of tempe and a loss of revenue for tempe businesses.

Design and Development of the Mechanical Tempe Slicer

In this study, the tempeh slicer was designed by considering several important parameters. First, the effective capacity of the measured tool is 367.70 kg/hour, which shows that this tool is able to produce large amounts of tempeh slices at optimal speed. Second, the percentage of damage to the material recorded is 24.015%, which is still within reasonable limits for mechanical tempeh processing.

The design of the mechanical tempe slicer is based on the principle of using a rotating blade to slice the tempe. The blade is designed to rotate at a speed of 3000 rpm, which is fast enough to slice the tempe quickly and efficiently. The slicer is also equipped with a conveyor belt that can handle large quantities of tempe.

Economic Analysis

Through the economic analysis conducted, the cost of goods (BEP) for the first year to the fifth year is Rp 30,446/kg, while the total production reaches 1,763,355 kg/year. This shows that investment in this slicer is not only efficient in terms of time but also in terms of cost.

Furthermore, Net Present Value (NPV) of this investment reaches Rp 1,642,089,764.1 per year with an interest rate of 7.5%, which shows that this tool provides a significant economic benefit in the long run. The Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 52.68% also shows that investment in this slicer tool is very profitable and feasible to implement.

The mechanical tempe slicer of the 0.5 HP driving force can be declared feasible to be cultivated. Not only increases the efficiency and quality of tempeh slices, but also provides added value in terms of economic.
