This study aims to assess the increase in the properties of clay soil through testing the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and free compressive tests. It is hoped that the use of this material can improve the carrying capacity of clay soil to meet the specified technical requirements.

Materials and Methods

The original clay sample had 62.50% moisture content, specific weight 2.59, liquid limit (LL) 60.82%, plastic limit (PL) 24.38%, and Plasticity Index (IP) 36, 44%. Based on the classification, the original clay is included in the Clay High Plasticity (CH) category according to USCS and A-7-6 according to AASHTO. The Non-Unsoided Laboratory CBR value for the original soil reaches 2.52%, while the unconfined compression test value is 1.15 gr/cm².

The addition of GGBFS has a significant effect on improving soil quality. In a mixture with 35% GGBFS and 2% cement, the maximum value of CBR is not submerged at 6.85% and the free compressive strength test value is 2.52 gr/cm² after the affair period of 14 days. This shows that the combination of GGBFS and cement is effective in increasing the carrying capacity of clay soils.
