Introduction

Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD) is a common problem that affects many people, including students of the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) of the University of North Sumatra (USU). This joint is a crucial part of the stomatognatic system, and disturbances in one component can interfere with the function of other components, causing an imbalance of function. In this context, research was conducted to analyze the severity of TMD in FKG students before and after they underwent jaw training.

The Importance of Jaw Training in Reducing TMD Symptoms

Jaw training, also known as jaw exercises, has been proven to be an effective way to reduce the severity of TMD symptoms. This disorder is often characterized by pain in the jaw, difficulty opening the mouth, and muscle tension around the face. By doing the right exercise, muscle tension can be reduced, and blood circulation in the jaw area can increase, helping to reduce pain and improve joint function. Jaw exercises, such as the movement of opening and closing the mouth slowly and the movement of the side to the side, have been proven to help relax the tense jaw muscles. In addition, this exercise also strengthens the muscles of supporting temporomandibular joints, which are very important to prevent re-occurrence of future disorders.

Analysis of Differences in Severity Level

The results of this study showed a significant difference in the severity of TMD before and after doing jaw exercises, with 24 of 30 patients (80%) experiencing improvement. This suggests that jaw training has a significant positive impact on reducing the severity of TMD symptoms. The study used the purposive sampling method and distributed the Helkimo Anamnestic Index-based questionnaire to 30 respondents who complained about temporomandibular disorders. Respondents were required to fill in the questionnaire via Google Form. The assessment of patients with TMD was determined based on the total score of all questions, where statistical results were obtained through t-test tested paired.

The Importance of Education and Routine Exercises

The results of this study also show the importance of education for FKG students about TMD and how to handle them. The right knowledge about this condition and the prevention method through jaw training can help students to be more aware and proactive in maintaining their dental and jaw health. Appropriate education can also reduce the stigma that TMD is only a trivial problem, even though this disorder can have a serious impact on the quality of life of a person. By integrating jaw exercises in daily routines, students are expected to reduce the severity of TMD symptoms and prevent further problems.

Conclusion

Overall, this study provides empirical evidence that jaw exercises can be effective in reducing the severity of temporomandibular joint disorders in students. With a better understanding and awareness of the importance of self-care, it is hoped that the number of TMD cases among students can be minimized, and they can undergo more daily studies and life. Therefore, it is essential for educational institutions, including USU FKG, to provide prevention and handling programs that are appropriate for students.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Educational institutions, including USU FKG, should provide prevention and handling programs for TMD that include jaw exercises and education about the importance of self-care.
Students should be encouraged to integrate jaw exercises into their daily routines to reduce the severity of TMD symptoms and prevent further problems.

Limitations of the Study

This study had several limitations, including:
