The Role of Higher Education Adjustment to Independent Learning to Students of the Class of 2022 Faculty of Psychology, University of North Sumatra

Introduction

Higher education adjustment is a crucial process that first-year students undergo as they adapt to the various demands of the campus environment. In addition to adapting to their surroundings, students also need to develop the ability to monitor themselves, organize, evaluate, and create a learning environment that supports their learning performance. This is known as self-regulated learning. The Faculty of Psychology, University of North Sumatra, is one of the institutions that aims to provide students with the necessary skills to succeed in their academic journey. This article aims to examine the role of tertiary adjustments to independent learning among students of the class of 2022 Faculty of Psychology, University of North Sumatra.

The Importance of Higher Education Adjustment

Higher education adjustment is a process that involves students adapting to various aspects of the campus environment, including socializing, time management, and problem-solving. Students who are able to adapt well tend to have a higher level of independence, which is a key component in independent learning. Independent learning is a crucial skill that students need to develop in order to succeed in their academic journey. It involves students taking responsibility for their own learning, setting goals, and seeking help when needed.

The Relationship Between Higher Education Adjustment and Independent Learning

This study uses quantitative methods with simple linear regression statistical analysis to examine the relationship between higher education adjustment and independent learning. A total of 232 participants were involved in this study, taken using the total sampling technique. The instrument used in the study was a scale of universities adjustments based on aspects of university adjustment according to Baker and Syirk (1984), as well as an independent learning scale that refers to aspects of independent learning according to Zimmerman (1989).

The results of this study showed that there was a significant relationship between the adjustment of universities to independent learning, with a value of R 0.616 and a significance level below 0.001. Furthermore, the value of R² was 0.380, which indicated that the adjustment of higher education contributed 38% to independent learning.

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of higher education adjustment in independent learning. The results of this study show that there is a significant relationship between the adjustment of universities to independent learning. This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study only involved students from the Faculty of Psychology, University of North Sumatra. Secondly, the study only examined the relationship between higher education adjustment and independent learning. Future studies can examine the relationship between higher education adjustment and other variables, such as academic achievement and student satisfaction.
