Introduction

In the context of community health development, the role of family planning instructors (KB) is very important, especially in the socialization of the Long-Term Contraception Method (MKJP). In Bebesen District, Central Aceh Regency, KB counselors face challenges in communicating with people who have various cultural backgrounds. This study aims to analyze the intercultural communication competencies of family planning instructors and the efforts they make to overcome communication barriers in conveying information about MKJP.

The Importance of Family Planning Instructors in Socializing MKJP

Family planning instructors play a crucial role in socializing MKJP to the community. They are responsible for providing accurate and reliable information about contraception to the public, which is essential for making informed decisions about their reproductive health. However, the effectiveness of family planning instructors in conveying information about MKJP depends on their ability to communicate with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Research Methodology

This study uses a constructivist paradigm with interpretive descriptive methods. A total of 17 (seventeen) informants were involved in this study, including 7 (seven) family planning counselors, 2 (two) Village Planning Family Planning Assistants (PPKBD), 1 (one) MKJP acceptor, 1 (one) non-MKJP acceptor, and 6 (six) informants for data triangulation. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, observation, and document studies. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions.

Research Result

The results showed that the communication competency between cultural family planning extension workers in socializing MKJP consisted of five main components:

Motivation

Extension workers have high motivation to conduct counseling to the community so that they can choose contraception that suits their needs. This motivation is driven by the desire to improve the reproductive health of the community and to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.

Knowledge

Extension Workers have adequate knowledge about the material for counseling contraception and understanding of the culture of the local community. This knowledge is essential for providing accurate and reliable information about MKJP to the community.

Communication Skills

Extension workers possess good communication skills, which enable them to convey complex information about MKJP in a clear and concise manner. They are able to adapt their communication style to suit the needs of different individuals and groups.

Cultural Sensitivity

Extension workers are sensitive to the cultural differences of the community and are able to tailor their counseling approach to meet the needs of different cultural groups. This cultural sensitivity is essential for building trust and rapport with the community.

Problem-Solving Skills

Extension workers possess good problem-solving skills, which enable them to address the complex needs of the community. They are able to think critically and creatively to find solutions to the challenges faced by the community.

Efforts to Overcome Communication Barriers

To overcome the communication barriers that arise, family planning instructors carry out several strategies. Among these are carrying contraceptive acceptors to provide testimonials about their experiences after using MKJP. This is done to build public trust in the contraceptive methods offered.

In addition, the instructor also conducts counseling to married couples to ensure that information about contraception can be well understood in the family context. Counseling regarding the law of using contraception in the teachings of Islam is also important, given the sensitive issue in the community. By bringing this information closer to religious values, extension workers are able to minimize resistance that may arise from the community.

Conclusion

Intercultural Communication Competence is the key to the effectiveness of counseling about the long-term contraceptive method in Bebesen District, Central Aceh Regency. The efforts of family planning extension workers in overcoming communication barriers are very influential on the success of the socialization of contraception. Through a deep understanding of local culture and sensitivity to differences, instructors can be more effective in delivering important messages to improve the reproductive health of the community. This study provides insight for policy makers and related institutions to improve education and training for family planning instructors for the improvement of quality family planning services.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Family planning instructors should receive training on intercultural communication competence to improve their ability to communicate with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Family planning instructors should be provided with adequate knowledge about the material for counseling contraception and understanding of the culture of the local community.
Family planning instructors should be encouraged to use a variety of communication strategies to reach different individuals and groups.
Family planning instructors should be supported in their efforts to overcome communication barriers by providing them with resources and training.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in a specific district in Central Aceh Regency, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other areas. Secondly, the study relied on a small sample size, which may not be representative of the larger population. Finally, the study was limited to a qualitative approach, which may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex issues related to intercultural communication competence.
