In today's competitive world, becoming an entrepreneur is one of the keys to success. The ability to adapt to challenges, build good relationships with others, and motivate oneself in dealing with risks is crucial for entrepreneurs. This study aims to analyze the effect of emotional intelligence, self-independence, and family environment on entrepreneurial intentions among undergraduate students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Department of Management at the University of North Sumatra.

The Importance of Emotional Intelligence in Entrepreneurship

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one's own emotions and others. In the context of entrepreneurship, emotional intelligence allows individuals to adapt to the challenges faced, build good relationships with others, and motivate themselves in dealing with risks. Students with high emotional intelligence tend to be more confident and proactive in finding business opportunities, thereby increasing their intentions for entrepreneurship. Emotional intelligence is a vital skill for entrepreneurs, as it enables them to navigate complex social situations, manage conflicts, and build strong relationships with customers, partners, and employees.

The Role of Independence in Entrepreneurial Intention

Self-independence is an attitude to create one's own jobs rather than depending on the work available. Students who have a spirit of independence are usually more open to new ideas and have the desire to explore business opportunities. This independence is often influenced by personal experience, learning, and the influence of the supporting social environment. Independence is a driving factor in entrepreneurial intention, as it enables individuals to take risks, innovate, and adapt to changing market conditions.

The Impact of Family Environment on Entrepreneurial Intention

The family environment is a very influential factor in the formation of individual character and behavior. Families that support and provide entrepreneurial education to their children can foster a positive attitude towards independent businesses. Conversely, a negative or less supportive family environment can hamper the emergence of entrepreneurial intentions in children. This study shows that a positive family environment can strengthen student entrepreneurship intentions. A supportive family environment is essential for nurturing entrepreneurial spirit, as it provides individuals with the necessary resources, encouragement, and guidance to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.

Methodology

This study used a quantitative approach to collect data from 391 students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Department of Management at the University of North Sumatra. The data was collected through direct interviews and the distribution of questionnaires. The analysis method used was multiple linear regression to test the proposed hypothesis.

Results

The results showed that simultaneously, the three variables - emotional intelligence (X1), independence (X2), and the family environment (X3) - have positive and significant influence on entrepreneurial intentions (Y). Further analysis shows that each variable individually also makes a positive and significant contribution. The Adjusted R Square value obtained was 0.468, which shows that 46.8% of the student entrepreneurial intention can be explained by the three variables, while the remaining 53.2% is influenced by other factors that are not explained in the study.

Conclusion

Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that emotional intelligence, independence, and family environment have a significant influence on entrepreneurial intentions among students. Therefore, it is essential for educational institutions, especially in the Faculty of Economics and Business, to emphasize the development of emotional intelligence, encourage independence, and create an environment that supports students. Thus, they will be better prepared to face challenges in the world of entrepreneurship and contribute to the country's economy.

Recommendations

This study provides several recommendations for educational institutions, policymakers, and entrepreneurs. Firstly, educational institutions should emphasize the development of emotional intelligence, independence, and entrepreneurial skills among students. Secondly, policymakers should create an environment that supports entrepreneurship, such as providing funding, tax incentives, and regulatory support. Finally, entrepreneurs should focus on building strong relationships with customers, partners, and employees, and be adaptable to changing market conditions.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was limited to 391 students, which may not be representative of the entire student population. Secondly, the study only focused on the Faculty of Economics and Business, Department of Management at the University of North Sumatra, which may not be generalizable to other institutions. Finally, the study only examined the effect of emotional intelligence, independence, and family environment on entrepreneurial intentions, and did not explore other factors that may influence entrepreneurial intention.

Future Research Directions

Firstly, researchers should explore the effect of other factors, such as need for achievement, efficacy, instrument readiness, gender, age, and parental work, on entrepreneurial intention. Secondly, researchers should examine the effect of emotional intelligence, independence, and family environment on entrepreneurial intention in different cultural and institutional contexts. Finally, researchers should investigate the impact of entrepreneurial education and training programs on entrepreneurial intention and success.
