Introduction

In an effort to improve dental and oral health, counseling for dental health maintenance is one important step. This study focuses on the effectiveness of lecture and demonstration extension methods, compared to more comprehensive methods, namely lectures, demonstrations, and Joint Toothbrush Programs (PSGB). This study was conducted on grade 2 elementary school students in East Medan District, with the aim of assessing the decline in debris scores that reflect their dental hygiene levels.

The importance of attention to dental and oral health cannot be ignored. The high prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease, as well as expensive maintenance costs, make prevention efforts very necessary. Prevention can be done by removing plaque or debris through the habit of brushing teeth in the right way. Proper oral hygiene is essential for maintaining good dental health, and counseling is a crucial step in educating students about the importance of oral hygiene.

Research Methodology

This study uses an experimental design with the Pre and Post Test Group. Initial observations were carried out before treatment, followed by counseling, and then re-observation. This research divides participants into two groups:

Group I: receive counseling by lecture and demonstration methods.
Group II: Receive counseling by lecture, demonstration, and Joint Brushing Brush Program (PSGB).

Of the two public elementary schools and two private elementary schools that are selected randomly, a sample consists of four physical education and health teachers as well as 130 class 2 students. Data collected is then analyzed using the T-Test test to assess the significant differences between the two extension methods.

Results and Discussion

The results showed a significant increase in teacher knowledge about dental health after counseling. In group I, knowledge scores increased to 15 ± 0.00, while in group II increased to 17.5 ± 0.00. Although the knowledge scores of students also increased, namely 37 ± 0.48 for groups I and 36 ± 0.34 for group II, the t-test results showed that there was no significant difference (p> 0.05) between the two methods.

However, when he saw the decline in students' debris scores, the results were quite interesting. After counseling, the debris score in group I becomes 1.5 ± 0.47 and 0.4 ± 0.49 after 3 and 7 days, whereas in group II the debris score becomes 1.7 ± 0.65 and 1.4 ± 0.39. Statistical analysis shows a significant difference (p = 0.00), which means that counseling uses the lecture, demonstration, and PSGB methods more effectively in reducing debris scores.

Medan City Health Office is advised to provide necessary props and train physical education and health teachers. In addition, the school is also expected to provide supporting facilities so that teachers can provide counseling on oral and oral health optimally using a more interactive method.

By applying a more holistic approach to dental and oral health counseling, it is expected that students' awareness and understanding of the importance of maintaining dental health can be increased, which in turn can reduce the risk of dental and oral diseases among children.
