Introduction

The palm oil industry is one of the largest industries in Indonesia, and with it comes a significant amount of liquid waste. The treatment of this liquid waste using anaerobic ponds is considered less efficient and requires large land areas. Furthermore, the waste produced often does not meet the quality standards set by the government. Therefore, alternative technologies such as electrocoagulation are needed, which are sophisticated technologies in liquid waste treatment. The electrocoagulation system not only eliminates pollutants but also produces hydrogen gas, which can be a source of income to cover operational costs.

Background

Liquid waste from the Palm Oil Mill (LCPKS) continues to increase along with the increase in palm oil production in Indonesia. This liquid waste treatment process using anaerobic ponds is considered less efficient and requires large land. In addition, the waste produced often does not meet the quality standards set by the government. Therefore, alternative technology such as electrocoagulation is needed, which is a sophisticated technology in liquid waste treatment. The electrocoagulation system is not only able to eliminate pollutants, but also produces hydrogen gas which can be a source of income to cover operational costs.

Methodology

This study aims to determine the influence and distance between electrodes that are most effective in reducing pollutant parameters, such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Solids (TS), and Total Suspended Solids (TSS). In this study, an electrode made from aluminum with a reactor dimension of 12 x 12 x 36 cm and operation time for 3 hours at a voltage of 10 volts. Variations of the distance between the electrodes tested are 0.5 cm, 1.0 cm, 1.5 cm, and 2.0 cm. The sample was taken from the palm oil mill of PT. PP London Sumatra, located in Bagerpang, Tanjung Morawa.

Results

The results showed that the distance between electrodes had a significant effect on the reduction of pollutant parameters. The highest percentage of reduction for COD reaches 72,897% at a distance of 1.0 cm, while for TSS is 67.292% at a distance of 1.5 cm and total solids reaches 96,429% at a distance of 1.5 cm. This indicates that the optimal distance between electrodes for the electrocoagulation process is 1.5 cm.

Discussion

From these results, it can be concluded that the distance between electrodes is very important in the electrocoagulation process. The right distance not only increases the efficiency of liquid waste treatment, but can also reduce operational costs. Therefore, the selection of appropriate waste treatment technology and parameter arrangements in the process is very necessary in order to maximize results and minimize negative impacts on the environment.

Conclusion

The implementation of electrocoagulation technology in liquid waste treatment from oil palm factory is expected to be an effective solution to overcome the problem of environmental pollution. In addition, further research on other parameter optimization and application on an industrial scale also needs to be done to make a greater contribution in the management of sustainable liquid waste.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that the distance between electrodes in the electrocoagulation reactor be set at 1.5 cm to achieve the highest reduction of pollutant parameters. Furthermore, further research on other parameter optimization and application on an industrial scale also needs to be done to make a greater contribution in the management of sustainable liquid waste.

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study only focused on the effect of the distance between electrodes on the reduction of pollutant parameters. Secondly, the study only used a single type of electrode material, which is aluminum. Thirdly, the study only used a single type of liquid waste, which is from the palm oil mill. Therefore, further research needs to be done to generalize the results of this study.
