Introduction

Heavy metal contamination in seafood is a growing concern worldwide, posing significant risks to human health. Blood shells (Anadara granosa) are one of the most commonly consumed shellfish, but they are often contaminated with heavy metals such as Plumbum (Pb) and Cadmium (CD). These metals can accumulate in the body and interfere with metabolic processes, growth, and trigger cancer risk. In this study, we investigated the effect of kaffir lime juice on reducing heavy metal levels in blood shells using spectrophotometry of atomic absorption.

Background

Kaffir lime (Citrus Hystrix DC.) is a natural source rich in organic compounds such as citric acid, which is known to bind heavy metals. Citric acid has been shown to have a complex ability to bind heavy metals, making it a potential solution for reducing heavy metal pollution in seafood. The use of natural ingredients like kaffir lime juice can be a safe and environmentally friendly alternative for the food industry and the wider community.

Research Methodology

In this study, we used a spectrophotometer of atomic absorption to analyze the levels of Plumbum (Pb) and Cadmium (CD) in blood shells. The samples were first subjected to a wet destruction process to ensure accurate analysis. The measurement for Pb metal was carried out at a wavelength of 283.3 nm, while for metal CD was carried out at a wavelength of 228.8 Nm.

Research Results

The results of the analysis showed that the level of Plumbum metal (Pb) without immersion reached (262,5222 ± 8,4241) PPB. When the shells were immersed for 10 minutes, Pb content decreased to (226,2433 ± 9,5627) PPB, with a percentage of decrease of 13.82%. The immersion process for 20 minutes showed the Pb level of (176,3784 ± 18,8434) PPB, which means the percentage of decline reached 32.81%. Meanwhile, in immersion for 30 minutes, Pb content decreased more drastically to (127,2776 ± 14,8446) PPB, with a decrease in percentage of 51.52%.

As for the Cadmium metal (CD), the initial level without immersion was (366,4916 ± 23,6704) PPB. After immersion for 10 minutes, the CD content was reduced to (272,8264 ± 8,1840) PPB, with a decrease of 25.56%. Soaking for 20 minutes showed CD levels (227,1238 ± 22,1560) PPB, resulting in a percentage of decreased by 38.03%. And after 30 minutes of soaking, CD levels were recorded (198,6729 ± 8,1587) PPB, with a decrease of 45.79%.

Discussion and Analysis

The results of this study indicate that kaffir lime juice is effective in reducing heavy metal levels of Plumbum (Pb) and Cadmium (CD) in blood shells. This positive effect is influenced by citric acid compounds in kaffir lime, which have the complex ability to bind heavy metals, thereby reducing the concentration of harmful metals in the body of the shellfish.

In addition, the duration of immersion also has a significant effect on the level of reduction in metal content. The longer the soaking time, the higher the percentage of decreased levels of heavy metals detected. This shows that immersion in kaffir lime solutions does not only function as a cleaning method, but can also be a preventive step in reducing health risks for consumers who consume contaminated shells.

Conclusion

This study provides new insights on the potential to use natural ingredients, such as lime juice, as a solution in reducing heavy metal pollution in seafood, especially blood shells. The use of this method can be a safe and environmentally friendly alternative for the food industry and the wider community.
