Introduction

Dental operators are constantly at risk of cross infections originating from the blood, saliva, and other exudates attached to the tooth mold. To prevent this, a cleaning process is needed with running water and disinfection. The chemical disinfection method with disinfectant fluid is an effective choice to prevent the spread of infection in alginate molds. Alginate, as one of the popular tooth printing ingredients, is easily contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, which is found in saliva and exudate of the oral cavity.

This study aimed to analyze the effect of immersion of alginate molds in chloroxylenol (disinfectant fluid) on the number of Staphylococcus aureus and changes in the dimensions of the work model produced. The use of alginate molds in dentistry has become increasingly popular due to its ease of use and ability to produce accurate impressions. However, the risk of contamination with pathogenic bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, is a major concern.

Materials and Methods

This study involved 56 samples: 28 Alginate mold samples contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus and 28 samples of work models. Alginate molds are soaked in chloroxylenol solutions with various durations (1 minute, 5 minutes and 10 minutes). The influence of Chloroxylenol on Staphylococcus aureus is measured by calculating bacterial colonies, while changes in the dimensions of the work model are measured using digital calipers.

The samples were prepared by contaminating the alginate molds with Staphylococcus aureus and then soaking them in chloroxylenol solutions for different durations. The bacterial colonies were counted using a standard plate count method, while the changes in the dimensions of the work model were measured using digital calipers.

Results

The results showed that the immersion of alginate molds in Chloroxylenol for 1 minute, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes significantly reduced the number of Staphylococcus aureus (p = 0.0001). In addition, immersion of alginate molds in Chloroxylenol for 5 minutes has been proven to be effective in killing 100% Staphylococcus aureus without causing significant changes in the dimensions of work models, which are still in accordance with the specifications of the American Dental Association (ADA).

Changes in the dimensions of the work model that occurs in the anteroposterior line (AP) (p = 0.001) and the cross arch (Ca) line (p = 0.002) shows that immersion in chloroxylenol does cause changes in dimensions, but these changes are still within acceptable tolerance limits.

The results of this study suggest that the disinfection of alginate molds with immersion in chloroxylenol (5%dettol liquid) for 5 minutes is an effective method for killing Staphylococcus aureus without causing significant changes in the dimensions of the work model.
