Results and Discussion

The particle board that has been made is then tested for physical and mechanical properties. The results showed that the gypsum reinforcement agent was well attached to the shellfish and polyester resin skin, proven through FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infra Red) analysis. The best results for the physical and mechanical properties of the particle board are the density of 1,580 g/ml, water content of 0.2491%, thickness of 0.358%thickness, modulus of rupture (MOR) 47,081 MPa, modulus of elasticity (MOE) 249.09 MPa, internal bonds (IB) 15,809 MPA, and Impact Power 10793.99 J/M2.

Conclusion

This study shows that the use of gypsum as a reinforcement material on the polyester-resin particle board and shellfish skin can improve the physical and mechanical properties of the particle board. Determination of optimal gypsum composition can produce stronger and durable particle boards, so that it can be a good alternative to replacing wood as raw material for making particle board.

Future Research Directions

This study has the potential to be developed further with variations of other filler materials, such as bamboo powder or wood powder, to produce particle boards with better mechanical properties. In addition, research on the effect of polyester resin types and manufacturing methods on the properties of particle boards also needs to be done to get more optimal results.
