The construction industry in Indonesia has experienced significant growth in recent years, with the number of contractors increasing annually. However, despite this growth, there are still fundamental questions regarding the quality of construction project implementation. The skills and expertise of contractors are rarely examined as a determining factor in producing quality and competitive output in the field of construction. Success in construction projects is highly dependent on the technical and managerial capacity of the contractor, which is usually obtained through long work experience. Therefore, the workforce involved in all stages of the project, from planning to supervision, is a key factor. In addition, accurate work scheduling and efficient cost management are also very influential on the success of project implementation.

The Importance of Contractor Qualification in Road Construction Projects

The success of road construction projects in North Sumatra Province is highly dependent on the qualifications of the contractor. The research aims to analyze the effect of contractor qualifications on the implementation of road construction projects in the region. The study used a descriptive method to explain the characteristics of the contractor and the factors of work implementation. Correlation analysis was also carried out to understand the relationship between the qualifications of the contractor and the implementation of the project.

Methodology

The research data was obtained through the distribution of questionnaires to 51 contractors who were grouped based on qualifications, namely small, medium, and large. The descriptive method was used to explain the characteristics of the contractor as well as the factors of work implementation. Meanwhile, correlation analysis was carried out to understand the relationship between the qualifications of the contractor and the implementation of the project.

Results

The results of the analysis show that there are several factors that have a significant effect on the implementation of project work, which can be distinguished based on the qualifications of the contractor. For contractors with large qualifications, the capital factor has the most dominant effect with a value of 0.530 and a significance value of 0,000. For contractors with medium qualifications, the value of the work package has a significant effect with a value of 0.312 and a significance value of 0.026. Meanwhile, for small qualifications, the number of equipment owned affects the value of 0.280 and a significance value of 0.047.

Conclusion

Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that net wealth capital, the amount of equipment, and the value of work packages are important factors that support the implementation of construction projects in North Sumatra. A deeper analysis shows that although the growth in the number of contractors in this area looks promising, many of them still need to improve aspects of expertise and managerial. With good support in terms of capital and equipment, it is expected that contractors can improve the quality of their work. Investment in training and skills development for construction workers will also be very important to improve project performance as a whole.
