Introduction

Pregnant women are a vulnerable group that is prone to dental and oral health problems. The knowledge possessed by pregnant women plays a significant role in their behavior towards maintaining oral health. Research conducted at the Nirmala Sapni Medan maternity clinic aims to explore the relationship between the level of knowledge of pregnant women and their behavior in maintaining dental and oral health.

Background

Dental and oral health problems are common among pregnant women. These problems can be caused by various factors, including poor oral hygiene, inadequate dental care, and lack of knowledge about oral health. Research has shown that pregnant women who have a better level of knowledge about oral health tend to have better behavior in maintaining their dental and oral health. Methodology

This study used an analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted between August and September 2020 and involved 70 pregnant women selected by the purposive sampling method. Data was collected through a questionnaire given to pregnant women who visited the Nirmala Sapni Medan maternity clinic. The results show that most pregnant women (54.3%) are in the category of moderate knowledge, while the behavior of dental and oral health maintenance is also in the medium category with a percentage of 44.3%.

Results

The statistical test produced the value of P = 0.0001 (p < 0.05), which shows a significant relationship between the level of knowledge and behavior of dental and oral health care. This finding indicates that pregnant women who have a better level of knowledge tend to have better behavior in maintaining the health of their dental and mouth.

Discussion

The level of knowledge of pregnant women about oral health is very influential on their behavior. This may be caused by higher awareness about the importance of maintaining oral health during pregnancy. For example, pregnant women who know the risk of dental and oral diseases, such as gingivitis, can be more motivated to maintain dental and mouth clean through regular teeth brushing and periodic dental examinations.

In addition, the behavior of maintaining oral health can also be influenced by external factors such as the support of medical personnel, families, and the surrounding environment. Good education about dental and oral health should be done early on, especially for pregnant women, so that they better understand the importance of oral health not only for themselves but also for the fetus being conceived.

Conclusion

The results of this study highlight the importance of providing adequate information and education to pregnant women regarding the maintenance of dental and oral health. Thus, mothers are expected to increase their knowledge, which in turn will increase positive behavior in maintaining oral health. With proper knowledge and adequate support, it is hoped that pregnant women can avoid the problems of dental and mouth, and their health during pregnancy can be maintained properly. This is an important step in preparing a healthy generation in the future.
