The Role of Irrigation in Increasing Paddy Rice Productivity: A Study on Farmers' Attitudes in Perdamean Village

Irrigation plays a crucial role in increasing the productivity of paddy rice in lowland areas. However, the effectiveness of irrigation systems can be hindered by various factors, including the attitudes of farmers towards irrigation. This study aims to investigate the attitudes of lowland rice farmers towards irrigation in Perdamean Village, Tanjung Morawa District, Deli Serdang Regency, and identify problems faced in rice field irrigation, efforts to resolve these problems, and ways to increase the productivity of paddy rice in the village.

Paddy rice is one of the most important crops in Indonesia, and its productivity is crucial for food security in the country. However, the productivity of paddy rice in lowland areas is often hindered by inadequate irrigation systems. In Perdamean Village, the lack of water supply or inadequate irrigation is a common problem faced by farmers. This study aims to investigate the attitudes of farmers towards irrigation and identify solutions to overcome these problems.

This study was conducted in 2016 and used a purposive sampling method to select the study area. The data used in this study consisted of primary data collected through direct interviews with farmers and secondary data obtained from agencies and related institutions. The analysis method used was a Likert scale and descriptive analysis method.

The results of this study showed that farmers' attitudes in Perdamean Village towards irrigation were divided into two groups. As many as 40 people (46.51%) showed a positive attitude, while 46 people (53.49%) were negative. This reflects that the majority of farmers in the village are dissatisfied with the existing irrigation conditions. The problem that often arises related to irrigation rice fields is the lack of water supply or inadequate irrigation.

The results of this study highlight the importance of irrigation in increasing the productivity of paddy rice. However, the attitudes of farmers towards irrigation can hinder the effectiveness of irrigation systems. The majority of farmers in Perdamean Village are dissatisfied with the existing irrigation conditions, which can lead to a decrease in productivity. To overcome this problem, one of the proposed solutions is to increase water discharge from Sei Snake to meet the needs of irrigation of lowland rice from upstream to downstream in the village of Perdamean.

Technological Innovations for Increasing Productivity

To increase the productivity of rice fields, farmers can adopt various technological innovations, develop superior varieties, and conduct balanced fertilization and control of pests and diseases. Technological innovation, such as the use of modern agricultural tools and more efficient irrigation systems, can help farmers in managing their agricultural land better. In addition, the selection of superior varieties that are resistant to pests and diseases and have high harvests will greatly affect productivity.

Pest and Disease Control

The importance of pest and disease controls also cannot be ignored, because pest attacks can significantly reduce crop yields. Therefore, counseling and training for farmers regarding effective pest control techniques must be carried out on an ongoing basis.

By understanding the attitudes of farmers and the problems they face, as well as applying the right solution, it is expected that the productivity of lowland rice in the Perdamean Village can increase. This effort will not only improve the welfare of farmers, but also contribute to food security in the area.

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increase water discharge from Sei Snake to meet the needs of irrigation of lowland rice from upstream to downstream in the village of Perdamean.
Adopt various technological innovations, such as the use of modern agricultural tools and more efficient irrigation systems, to help farmers in managing their agricultural land better.
Develop superior varieties that are resistant to pests and diseases and have high harvests.
Conduct balanced fertilization and control of pests and diseases to increase the productivity of rice fields.
Provide counseling and training for farmers regarding effective pest control techniques on an ongoing basis.

This study has several limitations, including:

The study was conducted in a single village, which may not be representative of other villages in the region.
