Effect of Seed Bulbs Weight and KCl Fertilizer Dosage on Potato Growth and Production

Introduction

Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L) are one of the most widely cultivated crops globally, providing a vital source of food for millions of people. The growth and production of potatoes are influenced by various factors, including the weight of seed tubers and the dose of potassium chloride fertilizer (KCl). This study aims to investigate the effect of seed tuber weight and KCl fertilizer dosage on potato growth and production.

Methodology

This study was conducted at Ujung Sampun, Tanah Karo, North Sumatra, at an altitude of about 1250 meters above sea level, from August to November 2007. The method used was a randomized factorial group with two factors. The first factor is the weight of seed tubers with four levels, namely: 25-30 g (B1), 35-40 g (B2), 45-50 g (B3), and 55-60 g (B4). The second factor is the dose of KCl fertilizer with three levels, namely: 0 kg (K0), 5.3 g (K1), and 10.6 g (K2).

Results

The results of the study show that:

Seed tuber weight has a significant effect on several parameters such as the weight of the tubers per sample, the weight of the tubers per plot, the total tubers per sample, the number of tubers class A, B, C, D, and production per hectare. However, the weight of seed tubers does not have a significant effect on plant height.
KCl fertilizer dose has a significant effect on tuber weight per plot, the number of tubers class C and D. However, the dose of KCl fertilizer does not have a significant effect on plant height, tubers per sample, total tubers per sample, the number of tubers class A, B, and production per hectare.
Interaction between the weight of the seedlings and the dose of KCl fertilizer has a significant effect on the weight of the tubers per plot. However, this interaction does not have a significant effect on the height of the plant, the weight of the tubers per sample, the total tubers per sample, the number of tubers class A, B, C, D, and production per hectare.

Further Analysis

The results of this study indicate that the use of heavier seed tubers has a positive effect on several parameters of potato production. This shows that the size of the seed tubers has a strong correlation to the growth and production of potatoes.

Although the dose of KCl fertilizer does not have a significant effect on several production parameters such as production per hectare, the effect on the weight of the tubers per plot and the number of class C and D tubers indicates that KCl fertilizer can contribute to improving the quality of tubers.

The interaction between the weight of the seed tubers and the dose of KCl fertilizer which only affects the weight of the tubers per plot shows that the influence of the two factors is not additive.
