Revealing the uniqueness of four local Gogo rice cultivars in Simalungun

Brown rice is an essential source of food in Indonesia, and local cultivars play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and genetic potential. This study aimed to examine the morphological and agronomic characters of the four local Gogo rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.) in Raya District, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra. The research was conducted in Raya Bayu Village, Raya District, at an altitude of ± 900 meters above sea level, during the period May to October 2021.

The results of this study showed that cultivars significantly affected most of the agronomic characters, such as plant height, number of puppies, number of panicles, and crops. Only the vegetative vigor character of seeds and spylet fertility did not show significant differences between cultivars. In terms of morphology, the four cultivars showed a very significant difference. This is clearly seen in the colors of Lema and Palea, especially in the purple Lombu cultivar. This morphological difference shows the genetic uniqueness of each cultivar.
