Introduction

The use of oil palm stem waste as a raw material for particle boards is increasingly popular in the wood industry. In addition, Styrofoam, which is usually considered as unused waste, can now be used to improve the quality of particle boards. In this study, the main focus is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties, as well as resistance to termite attacks on particle boards made from oil palm rod waste. This study follows SNI 03-2105-2006 standards for physical and mechanical properties, as well as SNI 01-7207-2006 for resistance to termite attacks.

Methodology

The variations used in this study include particle size (20, 35, and 50 mesh) and the composition of the ratio between phenol formaldehyde and styrofoam (60:40; 70:30; 80:20; and 90:10). The particle board produced has a size of 25 cm x 25 cm x 1 cm with a target density of 0.7 g/cm³ and is pressed at a pressure of 25 kgf/cm² for 10 minutes.

The particle size of the oil palm stem waste was varied to determine its effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the particle boards. The particle size was measured using a mesh sieve, with the three different sizes being 20, 35, and 50 mesh. The composition of the ratio between phenol formaldehyde and styrofoam was also varied to determine its effect on the properties of the particle boards. The four different ratios used were 60:40, 70:30, 80:20, and 90:10.

Results

The results showed that density, water content, water absorption, thickness of thickness, internal bonds, modulus of elasticity, and broken modulus vary from 0.46-0.58 g/cm³, 10.97-13.05%, 108 , 4-173%, 9.7-18.6%, 0.4-3 kg/cm², 1653-5791 kg/cm², and 10-46 kg/cm². Although all density and water content meets SNI 03-2105-2006 standards, MOE and MOR values do not meet standard criteria. On the other hand, not all values of thickness and internal bonds meet the standards.

The results of this study show that the physical and mechanical properties of the particle boards vary depending on the particle size and composition of the ratio between phenol formaldehyde and styrofoam. The density of the particle boards ranged from 0.46-0.58 g/cm³, with all values meeting the SNI 03-2105-2006 standards. However, the water content, water absorption, thickness of thickness, internal bonds, modulus of elasticity, and broken modulus values did not meet the standards.

Resistance to Termite Attacks

Based on the analysis of resistance to termite attacks carried out in accordance with SNI 01-7207-2006, this particle board is classified as very low in terms of durability, with values ranging from 13.9-67.6%. In addition, termite attack rates also show significant damage.

The results of this study show that the particle boards made from oil palm rod waste are not resistant to termite attacks.
