Introduction

Exclusive ASI, or the provision of breast milk without the addition of food or other drinks, is a crucial aspect of infant care during the first 6 months of life. However, the initial survey results in the working area of the Labu Pantai Pantai Puskesmas, Pantai Labu District, Deli Serdang Regency, showed a lack of knowledge among mothers about the benefits and importance of exclusive breastfeeding. This study aims to determine the factors related to exclusive breastfeeding in the working area of the Labu Pantai Pantai Puskesmas.

Methodology

The method used in this study is quantitative with an analytical survey approach in a latitude cut. The research population consists of all mothers who have babies aged 7-12 months, with 124 respondents. The sampling technique used is accidental sampling, where respondents were chosen by chance while at the study site. This approach allows for a representative sample of the population, providing valuable insights into the factors influencing exclusive breastfeeding.

Internal Factors

The study found that the mother's internal factors had a significant effect on exclusive breastfeeding. The results showed that:

Age: As many as 50.8 percent of respondents are under 35 years old, indicating that younger mothers are more likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding.
Education: 52.4 percent of respondents have high education, suggesting that educated mothers are more aware of the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding.
Work: 66.1 percent of respondents work, indicating that working mothers are more likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding.
Number of Children: 60.5 percent of respondents have more than 3 children, suggesting that mothers with more children are more likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding.
Knowledge: 65.3 percent of respondents have good knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding, indicating that mothers who are aware of the benefits are more likely to practice it.

External Factors

The study also found that external factors play a significant role in exclusive breastfeeding. The results showed that:

Role of Medical Personnel: 53.2 percent of respondents claimed that the role of medical personnel who supported them was very helpful, indicating that medical personnel play a crucial role in promoting exclusive breastfeeding.
Traditional Habits: 50.8 percent of respondents stated that they did not have a tradition or bad habits that hampered breastfeeding, suggesting that mothers who are aware of the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding are less likely to have traditional habits that hinder it.

Relationship between Factors

Further analysis shows a significant relationship between age, education, work, knowledge, and parity or number of children against exclusive breastfeeding. In addition, there is also a relationship between the role of medical personnel and traditional habits with the success of exclusive breastfeeding.

Conclusion

Based on these findings, it is hoped that the Puskesmas can implement programs that support the increase in exclusive breastfeeding rates. One step that can be taken is to provide counseling to pregnant women about preparation for breastfeeding and increasing parental participation in support groups for exclusive breastfeeding. By doing this, it is expected that the level of knowledge and awareness of the public towards the importance of exclusive breastfeeding will increase, thus contributing to the optimal health and development of infants.
