Introduction

Ineffective waste management can have a significant impact on public health and the environment. In Indonesia, waste management is carried out through two main ways: reduction and handling of waste. One of the innovations in waste management is the garbage bank, which functions to manage and use waste better. This study aims to analyze community participation and factors that influence community involvement in the Garbage Bank in Sumber Melati Diski Village in 2019.

Background of the Study

Waste management is a critical issue in Indonesia, with the country generating a significant amount of waste every year. The lack of effective waste management can lead to environmental pollution, public health problems, and economic losses. In response to this challenge, the government and local communities have implemented various waste management initiatives, including the establishment of garbage banks. A garbage bank is a community-based waste management system that collects, sorts, and processes waste, and provides benefits to the community.

Methodology

The research method used in this study is a survey with a cross-sectional design, where the population studied covers all households in Sumber Melati Diski Village. Samples taken amounted to 100 households randomly. Data analysis was carried out using the Chi-Square test. The survey instrument used in this study consisted of a questionnaire that collected data on demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to waste management.

Results

The results of the study showed that several factors were related to community participation in the garbage bank. As many as 27.1% of respondents are over 40 years old, 35.8% live close to the location of the garbage bank, 39% are workers, 25% have high knowledge, 22.6% have a positive attitude, 19.4% has a trash can appropriate, and 51.5% actively sorting trash at home.

Discussion

From this analysis, it was found that the factors that were positively related to community participation were work, the distance of the house to the garbage bank, and the ability to sort waste at home. Conversely, factors that are not related to community participation including age, knowledge, attitudes, and availability of trash bins at home. These findings suggest that community participation in waste management is influenced by factors related to the individual's ability to participate, such as their work status and ability to sort waste at home.

Recommendations to Increase Community Participation

Based on the findings of this research, there are several recommendations that can be applied to increase community participation in waste management. First, the garbage bank is advised to conduct continuous socialization regarding the importance of waste management and benefits that can be obtained from these activities. Holding a weighing service post in each hamlet can also increase community accessibility to this service. In addition, the garbage bank can develop a creative training program or workshop to produce crafts from rubbish that has been sorted, so that the community not only plays an active role, but also gets economic value from waste management activities.

Second, health workers and community leaders are expected to be able to play an active role in the socialization of the Waste Bank. This is important so that all levels of society in Sumber Melati Diski Village understand the benefits and functions of the garbage bank, and are involved in managing waste in their environment.

Conclusion

Through these collaborative steps, it is hoped that community participation in community-based waste management in Sumber Melati Diski Village can increase, and provide a positive impact on the health and the surrounding environment. Education and community involvement are the key in creating a clean and healthy environment for future generations.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. First, the study was conducted in a single village, which may not be representative of other villages in Indonesia. Second, the study relied on self-reported data, which may be subject to biases and errors. Third, the study did not examine the impact of community participation on waste management outcomes, such as reduction of waste and improvement of environmental health.

Future Research Directions

Future research should aim to address the limitations of this study. For example, a larger sample size and a more representative sample of villages in Indonesia should be used to increase the generalizability of the findings. Additionally, a more rigorous data collection method, such as observational data, should be used to reduce biases and errors. Finally, a longitudinal study design should be used to examine the impact of community participation on waste management outcomes.

Implications for Practice

The findings of this study have several implications for practice. First, community-based waste management initiatives, such as the garbage bank, should be implemented in other villages in Indonesia to increase community participation and improve waste management outcomes. Second, health workers and community leaders should be involved in the socialization of the Waste Bank to increase community awareness and involvement. Finally, creative training programs or workshops should be developed to produce crafts from rubbish that has been sorted, to provide economic benefits to the community.
