This study aims to identify factors related to UNSAFE ACTION in workers in the processing department at PTPN I Pagar Merbau.

Background

The processing department at PTPN I Pagar Merbau is a high-risk area where workers are exposed to various hazards, including machinery, chemicals, and physical injuries. The company has a responsibility to ensure the safety and health of its workers, but it is also the responsibility of the workers to take safe actions while working. However, the question remains: what factors contribute to workers taking unsafe actions?

Methodology

This study was conducted from January to May 2024 in the processing of PTPN I Pagar Merbau by involving 60 workers selected using the total sampling method. Primary data is collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using the Spearman's Correlation statistical test. The questionnaire was designed to gather information on various factors that may influence worker behavior, including age, work experience, knowledge, work motivation, and perception of Occupational Safety and Health Supervision (OHS).

Results

The results of the study showed that all workers tend to take safe actions. However, there is important information related to the worker group: 31 workers aged ≥ 32 years, 32 new workers, 31 workers have low knowledge, 40 highly motivated workers, and 35 workers have an unfavorable perception of OHS. The analysis revealed a significant relationship between age (p = 0.000), work period (p = 0.000), knowledge (p = 0.011), work motivation (p = 0.003), and supervision (p = 0.001) against unsafe actions.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that age and work experience can affect worker safety behavior. Older workers tend to be more careful, while new workers may not be aware of the importance of safety at work. This is consistent with previous studies that have shown that experience and age can influence worker behavior. The study also found that knowledge and work motivation are significant factors in determining worker behavior. Workers with low knowledge and low motivation are more likely to take unsafe actions.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Improve OHS Supervision: Companies should increase OHS supervision activities by supervising regularly and applying sanctions for workers who take unsafe actions. This will help to create a culture of safety and accountability within the organization.
