Introduction

The 2014 election in Indonesia marked a significant milestone in the country's democratic journey, with a high turnout of young voters participating in the electoral process. Research has shown that the "smart voter generation" advertising campaign played a crucial role in increasing interest in voting among students. This study aims to investigate the impact of election advertising on novice voter motivation, specifically among class XII students of SMA Negeri 1 Lhokseumawe.

Background

The theory of mass communication, social marketing, and AIDDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) models provide the foundation for this analysis. The research population consisted of 308 students, with 46 students selected as a sample using proportional stratified sampling and purposive sampling techniques. Data was collected through questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability.

Methodology

This study employed a correlational method to evaluate the relationship between the X variable (advertisement of smart voter generation advertising) and the Y variable (interest in choosing). The results showed that the advertisement had a significant correlation coefficient with a RHO value of 0.443, indicating a significant relationship between advertising shows and interest in choosing. The analysis also found that 19.62% of the interest in choosing students could be explained by advertising shows, while the other 80.38% were influenced by other factors not covered in this study.

Analysis of the Impact of Advertising on Interest in Choosing

The effect of election advertisements on students as novice voters shows that appropriate communication media can increase their awareness and interest in being involved in elections. Interesting and informative advertising shows more understanding of students about the importance of participating in democracy. Although the contribution of advertising shows reaches 19.62%, there are other factors that also play an important role. For example, the family environment, education obtained at school, as well as peers can also influence the decision of a student to vote. Therefore, a multi-factor approach in increasing the participation of novice voters is very necessary.

This research is relevant in the context of political education and awareness of democracy among the younger generation. Considering that novice voters are important assets for the sustainability of democracy, increasing their interest in voting through the right advertising and campaigns can have a positive impact on the future of a country's political future. In this case, the government and educational institutions need to collaborate to design strategies that can facilitate better political awareness among students.

The results of this study provide insight for policymakers, educators, and the general public regarding the importance of effective communication in efforts to increase voter participation among youth. Opportunities to explore further related to the influence of other immeasurable factors in this study can also be the next step to understand more in the dynamics of the behavior of novice voters.

The results show that advertising plays a crucial role in increasing interest in voting among students.
