Diversity Index of Insects in Various Types of Land: A Study on Corn, Long Beans, and Rice

Introduction

The diversity of insects in agricultural land is a crucial aspect of maintaining the balance of ecosystems and plant health. Insects play a vital role in pollination, natural pest control, and decomposition, making them essential components of agricultural ecosystems. Understanding the diversity of insects in various types of land can help farmers manage their plants more effectively, leading to improved agricultural productivity and sustainability. Methodology

The study was conducted in Susuk Village and Pest Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, from January 2014 to February 2014. To make observations, three types of insect traps were used, namely Sweep Net, Pitfall Trap, and Light Trap. The results showed that the caught insects consisted of six orders and sixteen families. The relative density of insects in each plant type was calculated, and the Shannon-Weiner diversity index (H ') was used to determine the level of insect diversity.

Results

The results of the study showed that the relative density of insects in each plant type varied significantly. In corn plants, the highest relative density value reached 7.93%, while the lowest was 4.76%. In rice, the highest relative density value is 11.5% and the lowest is 2.59%. Whereas in long beans, the highest relative density value is 36.9% and the lowest 4.62%. Based on the Shannon-Weiner diversity index (H '), the value of insect diversity in corn is 2,368 (medium category), in rice 2,133 (medium category), and in long beans 2,258 (medium category).
