The Influence of Lecture Methods and Reciprocal Rhymes in Increasing Knowledge and Attitudes of Couples of Childbearing Age Regarding Steady Contraception

Introduction

The increasing population is one of the global challenges faced by various countries, including Indonesia. In response to this problem, the government seeks to anticipate the rate of population growth through various family planning programs (KB), including steady contraception. This study aims to analyze the effect of two methods, namely the lecture method and the method of reciprocating rhymes, in increasing the knowledge and attitudes of the couple of childbearing age (PUS) regarding the solid contraception in the working area of the Batang Kuis Health Center in Deli Serdang Regency in 2016.

Background

The population growth in Indonesia is a significant concern, and the government has implemented various family planning programs to control it. Steady contraception is one of the methods used to prevent unwanted pregnancies. However, the effectiveness of this method depends on the knowledge and attitudes of the couples of childbearing age (PUS) towards it. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the effect of different educational methods on increasing the knowledge and attitudes of PUS regarding steady contraception.

Methodology

In this study, a pseudo experimental design was used with a two-group pretest-posttest approach. The population involved in this study consisted of all couples of childbearing age who did not participate in a steady contraceptive program, totaling 1168 pus. Of these, 15 pus samples were taken for each group, namely the group that received the lecture method and the group that received the method of reciprocating rhymes. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire distributed at three stages: pretest, treatment, and posttest.

Data Analysis

Data analysis was carried out using a T-Pasangan test for normal distributed data, as well as the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test for non-distributed data. The results of the analysis showed that there was a significant effect of the lecture method on knowledge (p <0,0001) and attitude (p = 0.001) pus. Meanwhile, the reciprocal method also shows a positive effect on increasing knowledge (p = 0.001) and attitude (p <0,0001) pus regarding steady contraception. More interesting, the results show that the method of reciprocating rhymes is more effective than the lecture method in increasing knowledge (p = 0.036) and attitude (p = 0.011) pus.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that both the lecture method and the method of reciprocating rhymes are effective in increasing the knowledge and attitudes of PUS regarding steady contraception. However, the method of reciprocating rhymes is more effective than the lecture method in increasing knowledge and attitude. This is because the method of reciprocating rhymes is more interactive and fun, making it easier for PUS to absorb information related to KB.

Conclusion

Based on these findings, it is recommended that health promotion using the reciprocal method is more prioritized, because this method is not only more interesting, but it is also easier to absorb information related to KB. Through a more interactive and fun approach, it is expected that PUS can be more proactive in following counseling, so that they can apply good ways in the use of steady contraception.

This study has some limitations. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, and the study was conducted in a specific area, which may not be representative of the entire population. Secondly, the study only analyzed the effect of two methods, and other methods may also be effective in increasing knowledge and attitudes of PUS.

Future Research Directions

Future research should focus on exploring other methods of health education that can be effective in increasing knowledge and attitudes of PUS regarding steady contraception. Additionally, research should be conducted to identify the most effective combination of educational approaches that can be used to increase public awareness and knowledge about the importance of contraception.
