Perception of Librarians on Employee Interpersonal Skills at the Sari Mutiara Indonesia University Library

Introduction

The role of librarians in providing information services has evolved significantly over the years. Gone are the days when librarians were merely bookkeepers; today, they are expected to be skilled communicators, problem solvers, and emotional intelligence experts. In this context, employee interpersonal skills have become a crucial aspect of library services. This study aims to explore the perception of librarians regarding employee interpersonal skills at the Sari Mutiara Indonesia University Library.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive research method, collecting data through literature and questionnaire studies. The research population consisted of 8333 active students of Sari Mutiara Indonesia University, and 100 samples were taken using the Slovin formula and accidental sampling questionnaire distribution techniques. The questionnaire consisted of 20 question items arranged in a grid, focusing on four indicators: listening skills, providing feedback, persuading skills, and managing conflict.

Results

The results of this study revealed several important findings regarding employee interpersonal skills. In the aspect of listening skills, the majority (95%) of employees were considered capable of listening well without interrupting the conversation, so that information could be conveyed effectively. This shows that employees have the ability to give full attention to users, which is a crucial factor in information services.

Furthermore, in the context of the skills to provide feedback, 91% of employees succeeded in asking the right question to clarify the meaning of the information submitted by the Pemistaka. In addition, 68% of employees were also able to provide responses that supported the situation faced by users. This ability is very important in building mutually beneficial interactions between employees and users, as well as helping users feel more valued and heard.

When viewed from persuading skills, 88% of employees showed good ability in explaining the purpose of requests for library, and 53% of employees were able to touch the emotional aspects of librarians. This shows that employees not only function as information presenters, but also play a role in understanding and responding to the emotional needs of users. This skill is very valuable in the world of libraries that require deeper interaction with visitors.

In terms of managing conflict, 95% of employees succeeded in increasing quality information for users who face sanctions, and 62% of employees were able to reduce the formation of camps among the libraries. This shows that employees have competence in overcoming problems that arise, thus creating a more harmonious environment for all parties.

Discussion

The results of this study have several implications for library managers and employees. Firstly, the findings suggest that employees at the Sari Mutiara Indonesia University Library possess good interpersonal skills, which are essential for providing effective information services. Secondly, the study highlights the importance of employee interpersonal skills in building mutually beneficial interactions between employees and users, as well as creating a more harmonious environment for all parties.

The results of this study are also expected to be a reference for Library Managers of Sari Mutiara Indonesia University in an effort to improve employee interpersonal skills. With an increase in this skill, it is hoped that a better relationship can be created between employees and users, between employees themselves, and between users and fellow users. Good interpersonal skills will support more optimal library services and valuable experiences for all libraries.
