Introduction

The coastal regions of Deli Serdang Regency, particularly in Hamparan Perak District, Percut Sei Tuan, Labuhan Deli, and Labu Beach, have suffered significant mangrove forest destruction. Mangrove forests play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of coastal ecosystems, providing habitat for various marine species, and protecting against natural disasters such as tsunamis and storms. However, the destruction of mangrove forests has been a pressing concern in recent years, with the loss of these vital ecosystems having severe socio-economic and environmental implications. This study aims to investigate the influence of socio-economic aspects of coastal communities on the destruction of mangrove forests in Deli Serdang Regency.

Methodology

This study involved a sample of 100 respondents who were randomly selected proportionally from the coastal community in the four districts. Data was collected through direct interviews using a questionnaire and analyzed using a structural equation model (SEM) with the Lisrel program version 8.50. The questionnaire was designed to gather information on the socio-economic factors that influence the destruction of mangrove forests, including social factors such as age, education, and cosmopolitan level, as well as economic factors such as family income, mangrove forest needs, number of workers in the family, and the price of mangrove forests.

The results of this study showed that the social and economic factors of coastal communities have a significant influence on the destruction of mangrove forests. The analysis revealed that:
