Analysis of the Effect of Net Interest Margin (NIM) and Operational Costs on Operating Income (BOPO) on Financial Performance at the Indonesian Regional Development Bank (BPD)

The financial performance of banks is a critical aspect of the banking industry, particularly for regional development banks that play a vital role in local economic development. One of the key factors that can impact financial performance is the Net Interest Margin (NIM), which is the difference between interest income generated and interest costs paid. Additionally, operational costs to operating income (BOPO) are an essential indicator of a bank's operational efficiency. This study aims to analyze the effect of NIM and BOPO on the financial performance of the Indonesian Regional Development Bank (BPD) using secondary data obtained from the annual BPD Indonesia report published on the official website of BPD Indonesia, covering the 2015 to 2020 period.

Bank financial performance is a major concern in the banking industry, especially for regional development banks that have an important role in local economic development. The financial performance of a bank is influenced by various factors, including interest income, interest costs, operational costs, and other expenses. Net Interest Margin (NIM) is a critical indicator that measures the difference between interest income generated and interest costs paid. A higher NIM indicates that a bank is generating more interest income than interest costs, which can lead to improved financial performance. On the other hand, operational costs to operating income (BOPO) are an essential indicator of a bank's operational efficiency. A lower BOPO ratio indicates that a bank is managing its operational costs effectively, which can contribute to better financial performance.

This study involves published secondary data analysis, with a focus on four classic assumptions that must be met: no multicollinearity, no autocorrelation, no heteroscedasticity, and normal distributed data. In this study, we conducted a regression analysis to understand the effect of NIM and BOPO on BPD Indonesia's financial performance. The regression analysis was performed using the following equation:

Financial Performance = β0 + β1(NIM) + β2(BOPO) + ε

where Financial Performance is the dependent variable, NIM and BOPO are the independent variables, β0 is the constant term, β1 and β2 are the coefficients of NIM and BOPO, respectively, and ε is the error term.

The results of the regression analysis showed that the data used meets the classic assumptions needed. From the regression analysis, it was found that both NIM and BOPO partially had a significant influence on the financial performance of BPD Indonesia. This means that an increase in NIM can have a positive impact on bank financial performance, while good operational cost management also contributes to better results.

In addition, this research also shows that NIM and BOPO simultaneously have a significant influence on the financial performance of BPD Indonesia. This shows that the two variables not only have a separate impact, but also interact with each other and contribute to better performance achievement. The simultaneous effect of NIM and BOPO on financial performance can be seen in the following equation:

Financial Performance = β0 + β1(NIM) + β2(BOPO) + β3(NIM × BOPO) + ε

From the results of the analysis conducted, it can be concluded that the two factors, namely Net Interest Margin (NIM) and operational costs on operational income (BOPO), have a significant influence on the financial performance of Regional Development Banks (BPD) in Indonesia. Therefore, it is essential for bank management to monitor and manage NIM and BOPO effectively in order to improve financial performance and support regional development goals.

Based on these findings, regional development banks are advised to pay more attention to strategies in increasing NIM and controlling operational costs. Good management of these two variables will not only increase profitability but will also strengthen their position in supporting regional economic development. Additionally, bank management should also consider the simultaneous effect of NIM and BOPO on financial performance and develop strategies to optimize the interaction between these two variables.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increase NIM: Regional development banks should focus on increasing NIM by improving interest income and reducing interest costs.
Control operational costs: Bank management should control operational costs effectively to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs.
Monitor and manage NIM and BOPO: Bank management should regularly monitor and manage NIM and BOPO to ensure that they are within the optimal range.
Develop strategies to optimize the interaction between NIM and BOPO: Bank management should develop strategies to optimize the interaction between NIM and BOPO to improve financial performance.

By implementing these recommendations, regional development banks can improve their financial performance and support regional economic development.
