Introduction

Fertilization is a crucial aspect of agriculture, particularly in ultisol soils, which are known for their physical and chemical properties that are less favorable for plant growth. Ultisol soils generally have a low phosphorus content, making the application of the right fertilizer essential for increasing plant productivity. This study aims to investigate the efficiency of SP-36 fertilization in ultisol soils through the management of dosage and time of fertilizer application.

Background

Ultisol soils are characterized by their low phosphorus content, which can limit plant growth and productivity. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant growth, and its availability is critical for optimal plant development. The application of SP-36 fertilizer is a common practice in ultisol soils, but the optimal dosage and time of application are not well understood. This study aims to address this knowledge gap by investigating the efficiency of SP-36 fertilization in ultisol soils through the management of dosage and time of fertilizer application.

Methodology

This study was conducted at the House of Agriculture's Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan. The method used was a random block design (RAB), which consisted of two main treatments: the dose and time of SP-36 application. The dose factor consisted of four levels:

Do = without SP-36: This treatment served as a control, with no SP-36 fertilizer applied.
D1 = 50% of the optimum requirement (0.6 g/polybag): This treatment applied 50% of the optimum requirement of SP-36 fertilizer.
D2 = 100% of the optimum requirement (1.2 g/polybag): This treatment applied 100% of the optimum requirement of SP-36 fertilizer.
D3 = 150% of the optimum requirement (1.8 g/polybag): This treatment applied 150% of the optimum requirement of SP-36 fertilizer.

The time factor consisted of three levels:

W1 = one day before planting: This treatment applied SP-36 fertilizer one day before planting.
W2 = one week after planting: This treatment applied SP-36 fertilizer one week after planting.
W3 = dose of y2 one day before planting + dose y2 one week after planting: This treatment applied SP-36 fertilizer both one day before planting and one week after planting.

Results

The results of this study showed that the application of D2 (100% of the optimum requirement) significantly increased the availability of phosphorus (P-available), plant growth, and SP-36 efficiency. Additionally, the application of W3 (dose of y2 one day before planting + dose y2 one week after planting) also showed a significant increase in plant growth and SP-36 efficiency, although it did not affect the availability of phosphorus two weeks after planting. The interaction effect of D2W3 treatment gave significant results to plant growth and SP-36 efficiency, with efficiency reaching 14.38%.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the application of SP-36 fertilizer at the right dosage and time can significantly increase plant growth and productivity in ultisol soils. The application of D2 (100% of the optimum requirement) and W3 (dose of y2 one day before planting + dose y2 one week after planting) showed the highest efficiency in increasing plant growth and productivity. This suggests that the right dosage and time combination of SP-36 fertilizer can optimize plant growth and productivity in ultisol soils.

Conclusion

This study demonstrates the importance of managing dosage and time of fertilizer application in ultisol soils. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the optimal dosage and time of SP-36 fertilizer application for increasing plant growth and productivity in ultisol soils.
