Introduction

The selection of transportation modes is a crucial aspect of travel behavior, especially in marine transport. The choice between ferry (business class) and fast boats on the Sibolga - Gunung Sitoli route is influenced by various factors, including travel costs, travel time, frequency, departure schedule, comfort, and safety aspects of the ship. This study aims to analyze the travel behavior of marine transport users and understand the characteristics of users of the two modes of transportation.

The results of filling the questionnaire were then processed to identify the characteristics of ship users and the selection model between ferry (business class) and fast boats.

Results

The results of the analysis show that most of the destination of the journey of ferry (business class) is for service purposes, while more fast boat users have the purpose of family or social affairs. In terms of income, the majority of users of both types of ships have an income between Rp. 1,000,000 to Rp. 2,000,000. The reason for the selection of modes of transportation is also different: Ferry boat users (business class) consider comfort, while fast boat users choose the mode because of faster travel time.

The model for the selection of transportation modes between ferry (business class) and fast boats formulated in the form of linear equations as follows:

Where the six attributes analyzed consist of:

The results of the analysis show that the influence of all attributes (expressed in R² value) of 36.3%, which shows that there are other factors outside analyzed which also influence the user's decision in choosing a mode of transportation.

Discussion

The results of this study have several implications for the development of sea transportation services in Indonesia. First, the importance of paying attention to users' comfort in the operation of ferry (business class) considering this factor is the main reason for users to choose these modes. Adjustments in services and facilities provided on ships can be added value.

Second, the development of routes and the frequency of fast boat travel needs to be increased, considering that users are very concerned about the speed on the trip. This can encourage more users to switch to this mode, especially for those who have urgent needs.

Third, security aspects are an important factor that must be prioritized by all relevant parties, both by PT. ASDP and private ship operators. Improving the ship's safety system and providing clear information to passengers about safety can also increase user trust and satisfaction.

Conclusion

This research provides significant insights for sea transportation managers in optimizing services and understanding user preferences. By adapting the needs of users, it is expected that the mode of sea transportation on the Sibolga - Gunung Sitoli route can be more competitive and attractive to the community.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

PT. ASDP and private ship operators should pay attention to users' comfort in the operation of ferry (business class) and make adjustments in services and facilities provided on ships.
The development of routes and the frequency of fast boat travel should be increased to meet the needs of users who are concerned about the speed on the trip.
Security aspects should be prioritized by all relevant parties, and the ship's safety system should be improved, and clear information should be provided to passengers about safety.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. First, the sample size is relatively small, and the study only focuses on the Sibolga - Gunung Sitoli route. Second, the study only analyzes the travel behavior of marine transport users and does not consider other factors that may influence the selection of transportation modes.
