This study aims to analyze and characterize commercial metal foam as a wick structure in the heat pipe cylinder, with ferrofluid as a liquid working. The effect of metal foam surface modification through two methods: cleaning acetone and superhidrofobic coating, is explored.

Material Selection and Surface Modification

Metal foam is a promising material for wick structures in heat pipes due to its high porosity and large surface area. However, the surface properties of metal foam can significantly affect its performance as a wick structure. In this study, two methods of surface modification are employed: cleaning acetone and superhidrofobic coating.

The results show that the optimal thermal resistance is achieved in the heat input of 5 W (2.47 oC/W). The capillary testing reveals that the metal foam cleaned by acetone has a higher capillary pressure and a lower contact angle compared to the superhidrofobic coated metal foam. This indicates that the metal foam cleaned by acetone has a higher ability to absorb and move fluids in the heat pipe.

Conclusion and Implications

This study provides a deeper understanding of the importance of material selection and surface modification in the wick structure in the heat pipe cylinder. The results show that metal foam cleaned by acetone has great potential as a wick structure due to its hydrophilic nature, which can increase capillary movement and fluid circulation in the heat pipe.
