The Influence of Inflation, BI Rate, and Economic Growth on the Profit of Sharia Commercial Banks in Indonesia for the Period 2010-2019

Introduction

The Indonesian economy has experienced significant growth over the past decade, with the country's GDP increasing by an average of 5% per annum between 2010 and 2019. However, this growth has not been without its challenges, with inflation and interest rates fluctuating throughout the period. As a result, the performance of Sharia commercial banks in Indonesia has been influenced by these macroeconomic factors. In this study, we aim to analyze the impact of inflation, Bank Indonesia interest rates (BI Rate), and economic growth on the profit of Sharia commercial banks in Indonesia for the period 2010-2019.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive research method with a quantitative approach, using the purposive sampling method to select six Islamic banks that meet the criteria and have consistent data in the period 2010-2019. The Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Error Correction Model (ECM) techniques were used to analyze the data.

Research Findings

The results of the analysis showed that simultaneously, inflation, BI rate, and economic growth had a significant effect on the profit of Sharia commercial banks in the short term. However, in the long run, the effect is not significant. This shows that while these economic factors can affect profits in the short term, the effect tends to decrease over time.

From the long-term analysis, inflation and economic growth have a positive influence on bank profit, while the BI Rate shows a negative effect. This indicates that when inflation and economic growth increase, the profit of Islamic banks will also increase, while the increase in BI interest rates tends to suppress their profits.

In the short-term analysis, partially, economic growth has a positive and significant influence on the profit of Sharia commercial banks. Meanwhile, inflation and BI Rate also showed a positive effect, but insignificant.

Analysis and Implications

This research highlights the importance of considering the macroeconomic conditions in the planning and management of Islamic banks. Increased inflation and good economic growth can be an opportunity for banks to increase profitability. However, Islamic banks need to pay attention to the condition of the interest rates set by BI, because high interest rates can suppress the profits obtained.

Stable economic conditions and sustainable growth are very important for the performance of Islamic banks. Therefore, it is essential for banks to always monitor and analyze these macroeconomic factors for better strategic decision-making.

From the policy perspective, the results of this study can also be used by monetary authorities to formulate interest rate policies that consider their impact on the Islamic banking sector. By understanding this relationship, it is hoped that Islamic banks can be more resilient to changes in economic conditions and continue to contribute to sustainable economic growth.

Conclusion

Overall, the influence of inflation, BI rate, and economic growth on the profit of Sharia commercial banks in Indonesia shows that economic dynamics has an important role in determining bank financial performance. This study provides valuable insights for practitioners and academics in understanding how these factors interact and influence the Islamic banking industry. In the future, further research can be done by expanding the scope of samples or adding other variables for more comprehensive analysis.
