Internal Control, Management Morality, and Compensation System: A Study on Employee Ethical Behavior in the Payroll System

Introduction

In today's fast-paced business environment, employee ethical behavior is a crucial aspect of any organization's success. The payroll system, in particular, is a critical area where employees' behavior can have a significant impact on the organization's reputation and sustainability. This study aims to explore the effect of internal control, management morality, and compensation system on employee ethical behavior in the payroll system at the South Labuhanbatu Regent Office and the North Lawas Padang Regent Office.

Background

The South Labuhanbatu Regent Office and the North Lawas Padang Regent Office are two government institutions located in Indonesia. Both offices have a payroll system that is responsible for managing employee salaries, benefits, and other compensation. However, the effectiveness of these systems can be influenced by various factors, including internal control, management morality, and compensation system. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between these factors and employee ethical behavior in the payroll system.

Methodology

This study employed an association study design, involving a sample of 74 respondents consisting of 37 employees from the South Labuhanbatu Regent Office and 37 employees from the North Lawas Padang Regent Office. The data used in this study included primary and secondary data. Primary data was obtained through the distribution of questionnaires to respondents directly, which were collected within 10 days. Data analysis was carried out using multiple linear regression with data quality testing, including validity and reliability tests. Classical assumptions testing included normality tests, multicollinearity tests, and heteroscedasticity tests. For hypothesis testing, the author used a partial test (T test), simultaneous test (F test), and the determinant coefficient (R²). In addition, descriptive statistics were used to describe the data obtained.

Results

The results of this study indicate that internal control, management morality, and compensation system do not have a significant effect both partially or simultaneously on employee ethical behavior in the payroll system. Regression analysis shows that the contribution of the three variables to employee ethical behavior is only 9.8%, while 90.2% is influenced by other variables that are not examined.

Discussion

This finding suggests that although internal control, management morality, and compensation system are important elements in the organization, these factors are not strong enough to form employee ethical behavior as a whole in the payroll context. There are several possible reasons for this finding. Firstly, there is a possibility that the personal values of employees and organizational culture in both offices are more influential on ethical behavior than existing systems. Secondly, the compensation system applied may not meet employee expectations or is not interesting enough to motivate ethical behavior. A transparent and fair compensation system can encourage employees to behave more ethically, while unclear or unfair systems can actually trigger negative behavior. Thirdly, existing internal control may not be carried out optimally. Weak control systems can cause leakage of information or abuse of power, which in turn affects the ethical behavior of employees.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of considering other factors that may affect employee ethical behavior in the payroll system. The organization should not only focus on the variables tested in this study but also consider other factors that may influence the ethics in payroll. Efforts to understand more deeply the factors that influence the ethics in payroll will have a positive impact on the sustainability of the organization and create a healthier work environment.

Recommendations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only focuses on two government institutions, which may not be representative of other organizations. Finally, the study only examines the effect of internal control, management morality, and compensation system on employee ethical behavior, which may not be the only factors influencing employee behavior.
