The Effect of USU Voice Tabloid Media Content on Media Use and Information Needs

Introduction

In today's digital age, the way people consume information has undergone significant changes. With the rise of social media, online news platforms, and other digital media, the traditional print media, such as tabloids, have often been overlooked as a source of information. However, this study aims to explore the effect of USU Voice Tabloid media content on media use and information needs among students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of the University of North Sumatra (USU). By examining the relationship between tabloid media content and the use of media and information needs, this study seeks to contribute to our understanding of the role of print media in the digital age.

Methodology

This study employed a correlational quantitative approach to investigate the relationship between USU Voice Tabloid media content and the use of media and information needs among USU FISIP students. The population studied consisted of USU FISIP students, and a sample of 95 students was obtained using a stratified sampling and purposive sampling technique. The data analysis involved a single table analysis technique, cross table analysis, and hypothesis test using the coefficient layout formula (Rank Order Correlation Coefficient) obtained from the Spearman method.

Results and Discussion

The results of this study showed a significant relationship between the contents of the USU Voice Tabloid media and the use of media and student information needs. This indicates that the content presented by this tabloid has a significant influence on the way students access and use information. This finding is consistent with the use and gratification theory, which suggests that people use media to satisfy their information needs.

Further analysis revealed that students tend to look for relevant and beneficial information for their learning activities. The content presented in the USU Voice Tabloid, which includes the latest issues, campus activities, and socio-political news, is able to meet their information needs. In other words, this tabloid serves as a source of information that can be relied upon for students.

In the context of the use of media, this study shows that students not only rely on one source of information, but they also combine various media, both print media such as tabloids, and digital media such as websites and social media. This reflects student adaptive behavior towards the rapid development of information technology.

Implications and Contribution

This study made an important contribution to our understanding of how the media, especially print media such as tabloids, still have a role in meeting the needs of information in the digital age. This research can also be a reference for tabloid managers and educational institutions in developing more attractive content and in accordance with the needs of students.

Overall, this study shows that although there are various media choices today, tabloid media content remains relevant and able to influence the behavior of the use of media and information needs among students. Therefore, it is essential for information providers to always pay attention to the quality and relevance of the content presented in order to meet the expectations and needs of the audience, especially students.
