Analysis of Air Quality Relationship and ARI Incident in Pekanbaru City in the July-September 2015 period

Introduction

Acute respiratory tract infections (ARI) are infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Poor air quality can increase the risk of being exposed to ARI. This study analyzed the relationship between air quality and ARI incidence in Pekanbaru City in the July-September 2015 period. The city of Pekanbaru is located in the province of Riau, Indonesia, and is known for its high levels of air pollution, particularly during the dry season.

This study uses secondary data from the Pekanbaru City Health and Air Laboratory Office. The data analyzed included the number of cases of Pneumonia and Non-Pneumonia Pneumonia, as well as air quality (PM10, SO2, Co, O3, and NO2) during the July-September 2015 period. The data was collected from various sources, including the Pekanbaru City Health Office and the Air Laboratory Office.

Results

The analysis showed that the average monthly trend of PM10 and CO levels declined in August and increased in September. Meanwhile, the trend of SO2, O3, and NO2 levels increases every month. In September, PM10 levels exceed quality standards, while SO2, CO, O3, and NO2 levels are still below the quality standard.

The results also showed that Non-Pneumonia ARI sufferers are found in age groups over 5 years, with the highest percentage in September (49.19%). Conversely, people with Pneumonia ARI are found more in the age group 1-4 years, with the highest percentage also in September (45.79%).

Discussion

Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that an increase in PM10 levels above the quality standard has the potential to influence the increase in Pneumonia and Non-Pneumonia ARI cases in Pekanbaru City in the July-September 2015 period. The study also suggests that the city's air quality is a major contributor to the incidence of ARI in the city.

Recommendations

This research provides several recommendations for the Pekanbaru City Health Office, namely:

Increasing the prevention and control efforts of ARI by providing education to the public about the importance of maintaining respiratory health and avoiding exposure to air pollution.
Give medicine and masks to people with ARI to reduce the risk of spreading disease and protect them from air pollution.
Monitor air quality periodically and take steps to reduce air pollution, especially during the dry season, which is vulnerable to the haze.

Conclusion

Improving air quality and comprehensive prevention efforts are very important to improve public health in the city of Pekanbaru. This research is expected to be a reference for the government and the community in an effort to improve the quality of life of the community through the prevention and control of ARI.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including the use of secondary data and the limited scope of the study. Future studies should aim to collect primary data and conduct a more comprehensive analysis of the relationship between air quality and ARI incidence in Pekanbaru City.
