Introduction

The healthcare industry is a highly competitive market where hospitals and healthcare providers are constantly striving to improve their services and attract more patients. In this context, understanding the factors that influence patient perceptions and utilization of hospital services is crucial for healthcare providers to make informed decisions and improve their services. This study aims to analyze the effect of general patient perceptions regarding service quality on utilization of Bhayangkara Hospital Level II Medan, a hospital in Medan, Indonesia.

Background

Bhayangkara Hospital Level II Medan has been experiencing a decline in the number of general patients over the past three years. The level of bed occupancy (drill) was relatively low, namely 31.1% in 2009, 33.3% in 2010, and 51.0% in 2011. This decline in patient utilization is a concern for the hospital, as it may indicate a decrease in patient satisfaction and loyalty. Therefore, it is essential to identify the factors that contribute to this decline and develop strategies to improve patient perceptions and utilization of hospital services.

Literature Review

Previous studies have shown that patient perceptions of service quality have a significant impact on patient satisfaction and loyalty. The theory of service models emphasizes that customer perception of service quality has a significant effect on customer satisfaction and loyalty. In the context of healthcare, high patient satisfaction is associated with increased patient loyalty and retention. Therefore, it is essential for healthcare providers to focus on improving patient perceptions of service quality to increase patient satisfaction and loyalty.

Methodology

This study was conducted in February to April 2012 involving 88 general inpatients from the population of 406 patients. Data was collected through a questionnaire that assessed patient perceptions of service quality, including administrative services, doctor services, nurse services, service facilities, and service environment. The questionnaire was designed to measure patient satisfaction with each of these aspects of service quality. The data was analyzed using multiple logistics regression with a significance level of α = 0.05.

Results

The results of this study showed that patient perceptions of service quality had a significant influence on utilization of Bhayangkara Hospital Level II Medan. Specifically, patient perceptions of the quality of doctor's services had the greatest influence on utilization of the hospital. This finding is consistent with previous studies that have shown that patient perceptions of doctor-patient communication are critical in determining patient satisfaction and loyalty.

Discussion

The results of this study have important implications for healthcare providers, particularly Bhayangkara Hospital Level II Medan. The findings suggest that improving patient perceptions of service quality, particularly in terms of doctor services, is essential for increasing patient utilization of the hospital. This can be achieved by providing sufficient consultation time for patients, providing complete and clear information about patient disease, and giving more attention to every patient's complaint.

Complete inpatient facilities in accordance with hospital accreditation and patient needs.
Repair and organize environmental conditions inside and outside the treatment room, such as repairing physical buildings, re-painting, arrangement and maintenance of plants in the park.
Provide enough parking space for patients and their families.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of patient perceptions of service quality in determining utilization of Bhayangkara Hospital Level II Medan. The findings suggest that improving patient perceptions of service quality, particularly in terms of doctor services, is essential for increasing patient utilization of the hospital. Healthcare providers, particularly Bhayangkara Hospital Level II Medan, should focus on improving patient perceptions of service quality to increase patient satisfaction and loyalty.
