Technical Operational Optimization of City Waste: Case Study of Javanese Village, Langsa City

Introduction

Waste management is a critical issue that many cities face today. Langsa City, like many other cities, has struggled with waste management, with the volume of waste increasing by 10% per year from 2008 to 2012. In 2012, the volume of waste reached more than 324 cubic meters per day, while the ability to transport waste only reached 22% of the total volume of waste. This situation raises a pressing question: How to optimize waste management in Langsa City so that the problem of waste generation can be resolved?

Background

Langsa City, located in the province of Aceh, Indonesia, has a population of over 200,000 people. The city's waste management system is characterized by a lack of infrastructure, inadequate waste disposal facilities, and inefficient waste collection and transportation systems. The city's waste management challenges are further exacerbated by the rapid urbanization and population growth, which have put a strain on the city's waste management infrastructure.

Methodology

This research is a descriptive qualitative study that aims to analyze the spatial patterns and community behavior in disposing of waste in the Java Village, Langsa City. The study was conducted through observation and mapping, and the data was collected from various sources, including government reports, community surveys, and field observations.

Results

The results of the study showed that there was a shortage of waste disposal facilities (TPS) in the Java Village. Ideally, with a population of 2,568 households, 32 polling stations with a capacity of 1000 liters or 1 cubic meter are needed. However, the fact is that only 11 TPS are available, which is clearly inadequate. In addition, the number of ideal garbage rickshaws in the Java Gampong is 4 units, while currently only 1 unit is available. Garbage-transporting motorized pedicabs are very important because they can reach environmental roads or hamlets that cannot be accessed by garbage trucks.

Analysis and Recommendations

The imbalance between the needs and availability of TPS and waste transport equipment in the Java Village is the main obstacle in the management of waste in the region. To optimize the technical operational waste management, the following recommendations are made:

Addition of TPS

Immediately increase the number of polling stations in the Java Gampong to suit the needs, at least 21 more TPS. The strategic location of TPS and easily accessible to the public will increase the efficiency of waste collection.

Improvement of TPS Facilities

The existing TPS needs to be equipped with a hand washing place, rainwater reservoirs to clean TPS, and information boards about the types of waste that can be discarded at the TPS.

Increasing the Number of Garbage-Transporting Motorized Pedicabs

Increasing the fleet of garbage rickshaws in the Java Gampong is very important to reach all areas, including environmental roads that are difficult to access garbage trucks.

Socialization and Education

The socialization and education program to the public about the importance of sorting waste and throwing garbage in its place needs to be improved regularly.

Cooperation with the Community

Building a community participation program in waste management, for example by involving the community in the collection and sorting of waste at the RW level.

Conclusion

Through technical and operational optimization of waste management, as well as synergy between the government and the community, the problem of waste generation in the Java Village, Langsa City, can be overcome more effectively and efficiently. The recommendations made in this study aim to address the imbalance between the needs and availability of TPS and waste transport equipment in the Java Village, and to improve the efficiency of waste collection and transportation systems.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in a single village, which may not be representative of the entire city. Secondly, the study relied on secondary data, which may not be accurate or up-to-date. Finally, the study did not consider the economic and social impacts of waste management on the community.

Future Research Directions

Future research should focus on the economic and social impacts of waste management on the community, as well as the implementation of the recommendations made in this study.
