SNI Motorcycle Helmet Impact Strength Analysis Due to Free-Falling and Simulation Loads Using Software Ansys Workbench v 12.1

The safety of motorcycle riders is a crucial concern, and one of the most critical factors in ensuring their protection is the quality of their helmets. In Indonesia, the SNI (Sistem Nasional Indonesia) standards provide guidelines for the design, testing, and certification of motorcycle helmets. However, the impact strength of these helmets is a critical aspect that requires thorough analysis. This study aims to investigate the impact strength of SNI-compliant motorcycle helmets under free-falling and simulation loads using Ansys Workbench v 12.1 software.

The experimental method used in this study involves a free-falling impact test using a multifunctional test tool. The helmet tested is placed on a test frame that can be adjusted in height to simulate different impact scenarios. To determine the impact time, eight proximity inductive sensors are used to measure the distance between the helmet and the anvil. The force produced during the impact is measured using a load sensor placed under the anvil. The data obtained from the load sensor is sent to a data acquisition system, which converts the analog signal into a digital signal and stores it on a computer in a force format (N) and time (MS).

The experimental testing involved three different anvil shapes: flat, bullet-shaped, and semicircular. The results of the testing showed that the maximum pressure received by the helmet varied depending on the anvil shape. For the flat anvil, the maximum pressure was 3,677 MPa at the top of the helmet and 4,251 MPa on the helmet side. In contrast, the bullet-shaped anvil produced a maximum pressure of 8,267 MPa for the top and helmet side. The semicircular anvil showed a maximum pressure of 4,078 MPa at the top and 3,331 MPa at the helmet side.

To validate the experimental results, a simulation was conducted using Ansys Workbench v 12.1 software. The simulation model was designed to resemble the original specimen and provided the same treatment as the experimental testing. The results of the simulation showed that the maximum pressure obtained was 3,534 MPa for the top and 3,946 MPa for the helmet side for the flat anvil. For the bullet-shaped anvil, the simulation showed a maximum pressure of 8.259 MPa and 9,287 MPa for the top and helmet side. The semicircular anvil produced a maximum pressure of 4.218 MPa for the top and 3,474 MPa for the helmet side.

The results of this study are crucial in improving the safety of motorcycle helmet users. Helmets that meet SNI standards are expected to be able to absorb impact energy well, protecting the driver's head from serious injuries due to accidents. The data obtained from experiments and simulations show that the variation of the anvil shape has a significant influence on the strength of the impact received by the helmet. The selection of anvil in this test reflects the real conditions that may occur when the helmet falls. The flat anvil represents flat surfaces such as asphalt, while the bullet-shaped and semicircular anvil can represent the shape of other objects that may be experienced during an accident.

The simulation results approaching the experimental data show that Ansys software is an effective tool in predicting helmet performance under different conditions. By understanding the strength of the impact of motorcycle helmets according to SNI standards, producers and consumers can make better decisions related to security. This research also provides valuable insight for the development of better helmet design in the future, with a focus on increasing the absorption of impact to protect motorcycle riders to the maximum.
