Introduction

Access to clean and safe drinking water is a fundamental human right. However, the quality of water sources can be affected by various factors, including the presence of minerals such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals play a crucial role in maintaining the health of humans and the environment. In this study, we aimed to determine the levels of calcium, magnesium, and conductivity in water sources at PT. Tirta Investama Langkat, North Sumatra, using the complexometric titration method.

Methodology

The complexometric titration method is a widely used technique for determining the levels of calcium and magnesium in water. This method involves the addition of a complexing agent, such as EDTA, to the water sample, which reacts with the calcium and magnesium ions to form a stable complex. The amount of EDTA required to react with the calcium and magnesium ions is directly proportional to the concentration of these minerals in the water sample. In this study, we used the Murexid indicator to detect the presence of calcium ions, which causes a color change from pink to purple after titration with EDTA solution.

Results

The results of the analysis obtained showed calcium levels in water sources 2, 3, and 4 each amounting to 12.30 mg/L, 26.32 mg/L, and 13.98 mg/L, respectively. As for magnesium levels, the value obtained is 5.50 mg/L, 28.39 mg/L, and 47.57 mg/L, respectively. For conductivity, the measurable results are 115.2 μs/cm, 150.8 μs/cm, and 130.8 μs/cm, respectively. The measurement results show that calcium, magnesium, and conductivity levels in water sources at PT. Tirta Investama Langkat have met the standards set by SNI and Regulation of the Minister of Health Number 416/MENKES/PER/IX/1990.
