The 12th Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to create a safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly tourist destination. One of the key targets is to reduce tourism waste by half by 2030. However, tourism waste management remains a significant challenge in many regions, including Lake Toba, the largest lake in Southeast Asia. Effective waste management is crucial to maintaining the environmental cleanliness of tourist areas and supporting the achievement of the 12th SDGs target.

Background

Tourism waste management is a complex issue, and its challenges vary depending on the location and management characteristics. In Lake Toba, two tourist sites, Lumban Bul-Bul Beach and Bukit Indah Simarjarunjung, have different management approaches. Lumban Bul-Bul Beach is managed by the Government of Tobasa, while Bukit Indah Simarjarunjung is managed by the private sector. Understanding the differences in waste management between these two locations is essential to developing effective solutions.

Methodology

This study employed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology to map the distribution of waste in both tourist sites. The UAV recorded visual data on the distribution of waste, which was then analyzed to determine the type of waste, the amount of waste (items), composition of waste (%), and waste density (item/m2). A grid measuring 5 meters x 5 meters was used to compare the results of waste calculations with UAV and visual observations in the field.

Results

The results showed that UAV was more efficient in mapping the distribution of waste compared to direct observation methods. At Lumban Bul-Bul Beach, UAV worked 27 times faster, while in Bukit Indah Simarjarunjung, UAV worked 11 times faster. The accuracy of waste identification through UAV was also high, reaching 99.56% at Lumban Bul-Bul Beach and 38.29% in Bukit Indah Simarjarunjung compared to field observations.

Ground Sample Distance (GSD)

The Ground Sample Distance (GSD) produced by UAV in both locations was also analyzed. On Lumban Bul-Bul Beach, GSD was 0.53 cm/pixel with a height of 30 meters of photo shoot from the Take Off point, while in Bukit Indah Simarjarunjung, GSD was 1.42 cm/pixel with a height of 80 meters from the take off point.

Conclusion

The utilization of UAV technology has proven effective in monitoring environmental quality, including the cleanliness of a location. The two tourist sites in this study were categorized as very clean from the distribution of waste based on mapping using UAV. This research provides recommendations for waste management for both tourist sites, including technical and non-technical aspects, which aim to improve tourism waste management and maintain environmental cleanliness in the Lake Toba area.
