Introduction

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the most significant global health problems, affecting the productivity and quality of human resources. This disease not only affects the physical health of the patient but also has a profound impact on their psychological condition. Patients with type 2 DM often experience fluctuations in motivation that are influenced by social support and self-confidence, which in turn can affect their self-care behavior. Poor self-care can negatively impact the success of diabetes management. Therefore, it is essential to understand the factors that influence self-care behavior in patients with type 2 DM.

Background

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that affects millions of people worldwide. The increasing prevalence of type 2 DM has become a significant public health concern. Patients with type 2 DM require ongoing management and care to prevent complications and maintain their quality of life. Self-care behavior plays a crucial role in the management of type 2 DM, and it is essential to identify the factors that influence self-care behavior in these patients.

Methodology

This study is an analytic research with a cross-sectional design that aims to determine the effect of social support, self-efficacy, and emotional distress on self-care behavior in patients with type 2 DM at the Matsum City Health Center in Medan. A total of 49 patients were chosen as a sample of the overall population of patients with type 2 DM in the puskesmas. Data was collected through interview methods, questionnaires, and observations. Data analysis was carried out using bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test and multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression tests with a significance level of α = 5%.

Results

The results of this study showed a significant relationship between social support, self-efficacy, and emotional distress with self-care behavior in patients with type 2 DM. The most dominant variable affecting self-care behavior was social support, with a p-value of 0.049 and an Odds Ratio Exp (B) of 7,097. This indicates that patients with type 2 DM who receive social support have a 24% higher possibility of carrying out self-care behavior than those who do not receive this support.

Discussion

The findings of this study suggest that social support is an essential factor that contributes to self-care behavior in patients with type 2 DM. Support from family, friends, and the community can provide additional motivation for patients to undergo treatment. High self-efficacy can increase patient confidence in making decisions related to their self-care. Conversely, high emotional distress can be a barrier for patients to carry out good self-care.

Conclusion

This study highlights the importance of social support, self-efficacy, and emotional distress in influencing self-care behavior in patients with type 2 DM. The findings of this study suggest that health workers should conduct socialization about the importance of self-care behavior among patients with type 2 DM. In addition, health services should be collaborated with psychological and social aspects. This holistic approach is expected to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve the quality of life of patients, especially in the Matsum City Health Center in Medan.
