The Effect of Organic Material Application on the Availability and Absorption of Nutrients and the Growth of Black Rice Plants (Oryza sativa L.) in Rice Fields

Introduction

The use of organic material in agriculture has become an increasingly popular practice, especially in rice cultivation. Organic material helps increase soil fertility and affect the availability of nutrients needed by plants. This study aims to determine the effect of the application of a combination of organic matter on the availability and absorption of potassium (K) and the growth of black rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) in the paddy land. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of different organic matter combinations on the growth and development of black rice plants.

Methodology

This research was conducted in the Greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, from March to July 2017. The study used a non-factorial complete random design method (RAL) with seven treatments that are repeated three times. The treatment includes:

B (compost straw + chicken manure, 50g + 50g/pot)
C (compost straw + goat dung, 50g + 50g/pot)
D (compost straw + cow dung, 50g + 50g/pot)
E (Chicken Straw + Chicken Dirt, 50g + 50g/Pot)
F (Cacah Straw + Goat Dung, 50g + 50g/Pot)
G (Cacah Straw + Cow Dung, 50g + 50g/Pot)

After the data is collected, the analysis is carried out using variety and further-sorting tests.

Results

The results showed that the application of a combination of organic matter had a significant effect on soil pH parameters and the number of puppies at the age of 6 days after planting (MST). However, there is no significant effect on K-DD, K-HCL 25%, plant height, plant K levels, and the absorption of plant K. However, the application of a combination of organic material shows the same potential in increasing K-DD, K-HCl 25%, and the number of plant puppies. One of the interesting findings of this research is the addition of compost straw combined with cow dung can actually increase the number of plant puppies.
