Introduction

The high maternal and infant mortality rates in Indonesia are a serious public health problem that requires immediate attention. These deaths often occur in pregnant women who are not detected at risk early, indicating that the quality of antenatal services still needs to be improved. In this context, the village midwife acts as a model that is expected to provide good service and contribute to reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the performance of village midwives in Pidie Regency, with an analytical survey approach that uses cross-sectional methods.

Background

Maternal and infant mortality rates in Indonesia are a significant concern that affects the health and well-being of the population. The quality of antenatal services is a critical factor in reducing these rates, and village midwives play a crucial role in providing these services. However, the performance of village midwives is influenced by various factors, including motivation, commitment, leadership, knowledge, skills, and self-confidence. Understanding these factors is essential to improve the quality of antenatal services and reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

Methodology

This study used an analytical survey approach with a cross-sectional design to analyze the factors that influence the performance of village midwives in Pidie Regency. The population consisted of 393 village midwives, and 96 midwives were selected as samples. Data were collected using various methods, including univariate analysis, bivariate analysis with chi-square tests, and multivariate analysis with multiple logistics regression tests.

Results

The results of the study showed that the three main variables that affected the performance of village midwives were motivation (p = 0.003 <0.05), commitment (p = 0.027 <0.05), and leadership (p = 0,000 <0.05). On the other hand, variables such as knowledge (p = 0.739> 0.05), skills (p = 0.650> 0.05), and self-confidence (p = 0.105> 0.05) did not show a significant effect on their performance.

Discussion

The results of the study highlight the importance of motivation, commitment, and leadership in influencing the performance of village midwives. Motivation was found to be the most influential factor, with midwives who have high motivation having 40 times better performance compared to midwives who have low motivation. This underlines the importance of building motivation among village midwives so that they can provide more effective antenatal services.

Recommendations

Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that the Pidie District Health Office provide extrinsic motivation to village midwives who excel. The awarding and incentives in the form of bonuses are expected to increase the morale of the village midwife, which in turn can improve the quality of the antenatal services they provide.

Conclusion

In conclusion, to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, it is essential for all parties, including the government and the community, to support village midwives through increasing motivation and recognition of their performance. This will have a positive impact on the quality of health services at the village level, and ultimately can reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in Indonesia.

Limitations

This study has several limitations that need to be addressed in future studies. Firstly, the study only focused on village midwives in Pidie Regency, and the findings may not be generalizable to other regions.
